St. Paul addressed his epistles to both "laity" awl "clergy." "To all that be in Rome" (Rom. 1:7) "unto the church ... at Corinth, . . . with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord" (I Cor. 1:2), "unto the churches of Galatia'" (Gal. 1:2), "to all the saints . . . at Philipppi, with the bishops and deacons" (Phil. 1:1), etc. When Paul proclaimed the gos pel at Berea bis hearers did not even take this great apostle's word for granted, but "searched the Scriptures daily, whether those things were so," and for this God called them "noble" (Acts 17:11). They were the true spiritual aria tocracy of their day. Our Lord, when on earth, en c our aged even, challenged His audiences to "search JM,wm tares" for themselves (loh'n 5:39 Indeed, since God has revealed Himself and His plan of salvation in the written Word, we are re sponsible, each one for himself, to study the Scriptures. When Dives begged Abraham to be allowed to go and warn his five brothers about the horrors of hades, Abra ham replied: "They have Moses and the prophets, let them hear them," and when Dives urged that a word from him would be more effective, Abraham answer ed, "If they hear not Mioses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead" (Luke 16:29, 31). Do not depend upon your cler gyman to interpret the Scriptures for you but see for yourself what they say, for "every one of us shall give account of himself to God" (Rom. 14:12) and it will not be enough in that day to say "But my minister or priest told me . . . ." You are responsible to "search the Scriptures" for your self to "see whether these things are so." Search the Scriptures, especial ly the Epistles of St. Paul, and learn God's wonderful plan of sal vation. "Christ died for our sins" (I Cor. 15:3). 'We have redemp tion through His blood" (Ephe siana 1:7). "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou sfaalt be saved" (Acts 16:81). Subsequently ha told his wife he wanted to make a new will leav ing certain of his property to his son. She persuaded him not to do so, promising to execute a will herself leaving- the property to the son. Relying upon the definite pro mise, mad in the presence of sev eral witnesses, he agreed to let his will stand as written. The wife did not keep her pro mise. After her husband's death, she executed a will leaving the property to her sister. Who will get the particular property? The wife's sister. This was an actual case decided by the Sup preme Court of North Carolina some year ago. Upon the death of the husband, this particular property, along with everything else he owned, be came the absolute property of his wife under the provisions of his will. Oral testimony is not permitted to change the terms of a written will. The husband in this instance should not have relied upon the promise of his wife. He should have made a new will or revised his old will by means of a prop erly executed codicil. He could have left by .will the particular property outright to his son or to his wife for life and upon her death to his son. William Taylor, owned three houses. If he died without a will, all of his real property and per sonal property would have passed automatically under the intestate laws to his only chlid, a son nam ed John. He did not want to make a will. In the presence of witnesses, John promised his father that, in accordance with his father's wish es, he would convey tit house at 123 North Mai nStreet to his fa ther's sister, Mary, shortly after his father's death. We generally think of an am bassador as one who serves in a foreign country. However, any one who feels that he is commis sioned to help spread the gospel or impart God's love to others can be an ambassador for God in his own home. An elderly invalid, confined to her home, would jokingly say, "This old rocking chair is my means of transportation." She would add, "I have a mission, ev en though I am unable to go be yond my own threshold." Because of her wonderful per sonality many people, including children, loved to visit her. They went to her with their joys and their problems and came away with a feeling of gain. She always managed to inject into her conversation a few words about God's blessing. His great ness, and Hie love. Thus she in spired others to nobler thinking and better living. She was an am bassador of God's love hi her home. Prayer: Dear Father, we fee! humble when we think of many of Thy children who have trium phed over great difficulties to help in Thy work. Forgive as for sometimes taking the easy path. Help n to be more resolute in our purpose to be ambassadors of Thy love. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Thought for the day: Our mis sion is to impart God's love. Beulah Bunten Stiers (Kansas) LESSON LEARNED The value of experience can be determined only when the after effects have been analyzed. Hi K3T John refused to convey the house to his father's sister. May he be required to do so? No. The law of inheritance, which applies when a person dies without a will, cannot be altered or changed other than by a will executed with all of the formali ties required by law. .
