Shown above is one of nature's most amazing
odiiitiies. Sycamore roots embedded with 35 or more
stones. The beautiful oddity was discovered last
April by James "Bud" Briggs, of Marshall Route 2
as he was walking beside Ivy Creek about one mile
from the Ivy Bridge. It is now on display in the
News-Record window. The roots are 24 inches in
height and 31 inches in width.
Mrs. Doohia Fender Brief, SB,

morning, September 18, IMS, in
the home of a daughter, Mm. Vtr-

a long illness.
Mrs. Briggs was a lifelong rea
ident of Madison County.

he visited such ports as Marseille,
St Tropez and Gotfe Jon, France;
Naples and Genoa, Italy; and Pal-
ma, Mallorta.

Road Bond Issue
At the regular meeting of the Marshall Chamber of
Commerce on Tuesday, September 21, 1965, the
following Resolution was adopted:
WHEREAS, it is the opinion of the members of the
Marshall Chamber :f Commerce that the upcoming
ROAD BOND ISSUE will benefit all the citizens of the
State of North Carolina and certainly will benefit the
citizens of Madison County;
NOW THEREFORE, be it Resolved that the Marshall
Chamber of Commerce FAVORS PASSAGE of the
ROAD BOND ISSUE to be voted on in November and
urges all of the citizens of Madison County to vote for
its passage.

Mrs. Wallin gave us a delicious
chili recipe which can be made in
a large quantity and frozen.
She gave a very interesting t
demonstration entitled "Fashion
and Dress. She gave us helpful
ideas on how to dress to be a well
dressed woman. Mrs. Eileen Hens-
ley and Mm. Doris Roberts model
ed scarves.
The meeting was dismissed by
all repenting together a Collect
for Club Women.
A social hour was enjoyed by
all with Mrs. Wise and Mrs. Wal
lin serving delicious refreshments.
A Fall color scheme was used in
the refreshments.
Our next meeting will be Octo
ber IB in the club house. Visitors
are always welcome.

Above is pictured thelone tomato vine which has
attracted so much attention for several years. The
vine was cut down this week because it was crowd
ing the sidewalk and entrance to Sprinkle-Shelton
Wholesale Company on Main Street here. The vine
grew out of the sidewalk but seemed to thrive on its
t-nvironment. Standing beside the vine is Howard
Hoyle, who looked after and cared for the vine. When
it was cut down this week it measured some 40 inch
es in width and more than six feet in height.

"How much do you want to let
me take a pot shot at those
ducks?" the hunter asked the
Scotsman.
"Half a dollar," was the im
mediate reply.
The hunter let fly with both
barrels, killing 14 ducks.
"Well," the hunter said, smil
ing, as ne paid the farmer, I
guess I got the best of that bar
gain.
"Ah, I dinna ken," replied the
Scotsman- "They're not my
ducks."

erts, 69, of Ashevilie, who died
Saturday, September 18, 1966 were
held at 2 p. m., Monday in the
chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral
Home in Ashevilie.
The Rev. John F. Lunsford of
ficiated. Burial was in the fam
ily cemetery near Mars Hill in
Madison County.
Pallbearers were Glenn Bamett,
John Barnett, Roger and Bin Mor
gan, Tony Antonio and Clyde Baity.
Mr. Roberts was self-employed,
a native of Madison County, and a
Buncombe County resident since
1918.
He was a member of the North
Ashevilie Baptist Church and was
a ton of the late Luke and Maggie
Ray Roberts.
Surviving are three sisters,
Mrs. Bertha Hyatt, Mrs. Josephine
Hatch, and Mrs .Mattie Barnett
of Ashevilie; and three brothers,
Paul and Floyd Roberts of Ashe
vilie and Sam Roberts of Wash
ington, D. C.

Mrs. Lorena Buckner
Passes On Sunday;
Funeral Tuesday
Mrs. Lorena Wilson Buckner, 68,
of Rt 2, Mara Hill, died Sunday,
September 19, 1966 at the home of
daughter, Mrs. Charles Ball of
Rt 1, after a long illness.
She was a lifelong resident of
Madison County.
Surviving are the husband, Ken-
nie Buckner; another daughter,
Mrs. Charles Sumerel of Hot
Springs; the mother, Mrs. Isabelle
Wilson of Mara Hill Rt. 2; two
sisters, Mrs. Frank Ramsey of
Mars Hill Rt 2 and Mrs. Ben An
gel of Waynesville; a brother, Am
brose Wilson of Mars Hill Rt. 2;
and nine grandchildren.
Services were held Tuesday at
2:30 p. m., at Middle Fork Baptist
Church.
The Rev. W. L. Lynch and the
Rev. W. E. Russell officiated and
burial was in the church cemetery.
Grandsons were pallbearers. Hol
combe Funeral Home was in
charge.
