Mrs. Ethel Caton of Charlotte
came Tuesday to visit her sister,
Mrs. William Worley, ami family.
Mr. and Mrs. J. Moody Chand
ler and their daughter, Mrs. Fain
Sprinkle, and Mrs. Sprinkle's two
sons, left Tuesday for Tampa,
Fla., where they will spend sev
eral days with the Chandlers' son
and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs.
J. M. Chandler, Jr., and their two
children.
The Rev. and Mrs. Dan Force
and their daughter of Baltimore
visited friends in Marshall last
week-end and spent Saturday night
as guests of Mrs. J. J. Ramsey.

shall Presbyterian Church prior
to accepting a pastorate Jn, Balti
more a few months ago.
Dr. and Mrs. W. A. Sams spent
.last week-end in Winston-Salem
with Dr. Sams's daughter and

Accepts Position
With Welfare Dept.
Mrs. Helen King Edmonds of
Route 1, Marshall, has accepted
employment with the Madison
County Department of Public Wel
fare as a Typist and assumed her
duties June 1st. She replaces Mrs.
R. J. Plemmons who resigned.
Prior to joining the Welfare staff
Mrs. Edmonds had been secretary
to A. E. Leake, Marshall attorney,
for eight years. .
She is the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Rellie King of Route 1,
Marshall.

David Plemmons has been se
lected as the 4-H Club represent
ative from Madison County to at
tend the annual 4-H Forestry
Camp at Camp Millstone near
Rockingham. He Is the son of
Homer Plemmons of Hot Springe.
One hundred boys each a
4-H Club forestry; leader in his
county will converge on Camp
IMillstone in Richmond County for
the annual 4-H Forestry Camp
during the week of June 12.
The 4-H Forestry Camp is held
annually at Camp Millstone in
Richmond County as a part of this
overall 4-H Forestry Program. To
date, over 800 4-H Club boys,
representing each of the one hun
dred counties in North Carolina
and nearly one hundred county
agricultural agents, have attended
the camp. The camp has received
recognition as one of the best
planned and conducted activities
of this type in the country.

September class of practical nur
sing have been announced by
AsheviUe - Buncombe Technical
Institute. The last sessions are
scheduled for 12:30 p. m. on June
14, 21, and 28 at the Practical
Nursing Department, Memorial
Mission Hospital.
This class is open to all women
between the ages of 17 and 50
who are high school graduates or

Army Chaplain School at Fort
Hamilton, N. Y. for the past nine
weeks, spent Sunday night in Mar

Thomas J. Proffitt
Passes Wednesday;
Funeral On Friday
Thomas Jefferson Proffitt, 79,
of Marshall Rt. 6, died at 2 a. m.
Wednesday, June 7, 1967 in a
Western North Carolina hospital
following a lengthy illness.
He was a lifelong resident of
Madison County, a member of
Madison Seminary Baptist Church,
and was a retired farmer.
Surviving are the widow, Mrs.
Lula Rice Proffitt; two sons, J.
J. of Marshall and Everette Pro
fitt of AsheviUe; two daughters,
Mrs. Ida Mae Hunter of Marshall
and Mrs. Edna Faye Wilcox of
AsheviUe; and nine grandchildren.
Services will be held at 2 p. m.
Friday in the chapel of liowman
Duckett Funeral Home.
The Rev. Jess Slagle and the
Rev. G. W. Briggs will officiate
and burial will be in Bowman
Rector Cemetery. Friends of the
family will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends
at the funeral home from 7 to
9 p. m. tonight (Thursday).

Mr. and Mrs. Paul Metcalf, son
Keith, and Mr. and Mrs. Doyle
Amnions of Rt. 2, Mars Hill, at
tended the wedding of Mrs. Met
calf's niece Wednesday, May 31,
at 5:30 p. m., in the Little Chapel
of Wake Forest College. The
bride, the former Miss Martha
Sue Bragden, was united in mar
riage with Michael Sasser by her
grandfather, Rev. U. A. Bragden.
She was attended by the groom's
sister and her roommate at the
college, which she and the groom
attend. The groom's father was
his best man. A reception was
held in the church social hall fol
lowing the ceremony, with class
mates of the bride assisting. Mr.
and Mrs. Metcalf plan to return
home this week.

Fletcher, was honored Saturday,
May 27, with a birthday party.
Those present were Kathy Walk
er, Bobby, Mike and Karen Davis,
Gary and Stevie Frisbee, Ken and
Angela Pangle and Mike Norton.
The kids played games, having
lots of fun pinning the tail on the
donkey, and then enjoyed ice
cream and cake.
Adult visitors were Mrs. Buena
Frisbee, Mrs. Carolina Pangle,
Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Norton.
