K period of excessive rainfall
could really put burley farmers
in a pinch. During this period of
dry weather, tobacco roots have
been irrowintr faster than the
plants. Many farmers have added'
extra nitroiren which, in most
cases, was not needed. The excel
lent root system, plus the fertili
zer in the bed, are just waiting-
for the necessary moisture.
Farmers would be wise to have
their fields ready to transplant.
These plants can become too large
almost overnight should they re
ceive enough rainfall. Don't be
caught napping.
The Madison County 4-H Talent
Show will be held' Friday night,
Way 17, at 7:30 o'clock in the
Walnut School. 4-H'ers from
the various clubs will perform.
Winners will be selected to repre
sent the county at District Acti
vity Day June 25.
The public is invited to attend.
A small admission will be charged.

Tomato transplanting is al
most complete in the lower end of
Madison County. A lot of plants
were injured by frost and cold
winds. Many farmers found it
necessary to reset some of the
earlier set plants. The Spring
Creek and Meadow Fork' Com
munities have their transplanting
well under way and will be over
85 cofmplete by the end of this
week. Other areas of the county
are in various stages of trans
planting tomatoes.
Conditions for plant growth
and transplanting have been much
better than the 1967 season and
unless we have severe conditions
in the near future fruit set on the
early hands should be much better
than last year.
As it appears now, there will
be from five to ten per cent re
duction in total transplanted acres
in Madison County from last
year.
