A department spokesman said only about 3,600 applications had! been received by the time the original deadline expired Sept. 1. The number was considerably less than the estimated 4,000 Tar Heel motorists who received personal ized plates for 1968. Personalized license plates were approved by the 1967 General As sembly to provide additional rev enue for hihgway Deauinicauui. and out-of-state travel advertis ing. The program allows motor ists to select the characters which will appear on their 1969 license plate. The plate may consist of not less than three or more than six characters, including one dash Words or letter comoi na tions considered offensive, sug gestive or otherwise not in gooai taste will be rejected. Motorists desiring personalized plates may select characters to spell their name or initials, or to .io rther sroecial messages.
