TecJimdoal assistance is available free of clharfe throuifh the laL Soil and Water Conservation l)is- ,trict to (help 'you in finding out if drainage ds needed ami if so what1 kind. We will help in the layout of the improvements on the Land and in the supervision of iuslal- daition. Before you j'begin any dniinnKe work, there are two questions tliat must be amawered: How wet is the soil ami what is causing the wetness? Witness can 'be caused hy the flooding' of the streams, overflow of water from the hillside, seep age from the hills along the fields, Spring seepage, low spots in the field or from a tig-ht subsoil , 1 through which water moves ex tremely slow or a combination of the above. All wet lands cannot 'be drained! by tile. Many times thene, are lesel expensive ways of draining a field. AH alternate solutions should be cheeked 'before deciding on what to do. Man made stmctwea such' las roadB and high culverts should) be checked along with the soil structure and soil tilth. It may 'be that a deep rooted plant sudh as tall fescue rotated with row crops is all that is needed. The lescue roots would penetrate thei tight subsoil, improve the soil stioicture and keep the soil open so' it would allow a freer movement of water through the soil. If you have wet land that is troublesome and would like to have some assistance in putting it to a more productive use tlurouigh crop rotation, surface drains, open' ditches or tile, get in touch with your local Soil and Water Con servation District Office.
