MRS. PHENIA METCALF, a life-long resident of Madison
County, was 99 on Wednesday and her family is planning a party
for her next Sunday, (Feb. 2) at the home of her daughter, Mrs.
J. J. Chandler of Weaverville Rt. 1. Mrs. Metcalf is still active
and passes the time by reading her Hible and the Asheville Citizen-Times
and by watching television. She also makes her own
bed and enjoys drying the dishes. She lives with Mrs. Chandler
in winter and with another daughter, Mrs. J. G. Briggs of Mars
Hill, in summer. Her six other living children are Fred Marsh
lanks of Asheville, Mrs. Pearl Boone of Spruce Pine, Mrs. Ver
die Holt of Galax, Va., and Willard and Joe Marshbanks and
Mrs. Julia GaTdner, all of Florida. Mrs. Metcalf's first husband
was Dudley Marshbanks, a farmer who was the father of her
children. After his death she married Gregg Metcalf, also a
farmer, who died about 20 years ago.
