Roberts said the reason that he,
would not run for the Buncombe
post was that he wanted to main
tain his home in Marshall. He
would be required to shift his1
residence to Buncombe if he enter
ed the primary in Buncombe.
Buncombe will become a district
of its own and will conform to thd
28th Judicial District.
Roberts is the first Republican)
solicitor in the old 19th District
since George Pritchard, who ser
ved from 1919 to 1921.
A native of Madison County,
Roberts began his- political career
as clerk of the Madison County
Superior Court in 1938.
After serving as a Navy Lieuten
tant during World War II, he won
election to the State Houtoe of
Representatives in 1948 and to the
State Senate in 1960.
A graduate of the University of
North Carolina, Roberts has ser
ved as president of the Madison
County Bar Association, and he
lis a member of the state and na
tional bar associatoins.
He served Madison also as coun
ty attorney from 1948 to 1964. That
year he became mayor of Marshall
and served until 1966.
He is a former teacher at Wal
nut Hi-h School (1931-36).
A Baptist, he is also a member
of the Veterans of Foreign Wars,
The American Legion, the N. C.
and American Farm Bureau Fede
rations an. I a worker with the Boy
Scouts.
He is nuiiried to the former

represent. I pledge to WORK for
our DISTRICT to see that it
catches up with and hopefully
goes ahead of the other districts
in the state. Western North Car
olina has great potential and I am
interested in seeing that we re
alize it to the fullest extent pos
sible. Allot of work needs to be donei
on the LAWS that control oar road
funds, education system, ABC reg
ulations, insurance regulations,
election procedures, legislative
ethics, tax distributions, and many,
others. There are changes that
should be made in each of the1
above and it will take a joint ef
fort by several honest and sincere1
Legislators to accomplish this. My
desire is to be one of these men.
I already know many of the peo
ple in the District and want to be
come acquainted with the others.
I enjoy working with the public,
and certainly will appreciate your
suggestions, comments, and sup
