COST OF LIVING index rose in the same period. WAGES IN U. S. rose from average of $57.80 a week ($1.45 an hour) in 1951 to $131.60 a week ($3i9 an hour) in 1970. IN 1951 a family of five spent 5.5 of dis posable income for 690 I'OUNDS OF MEAT. IN 1970, a family of five spends 4.5 of disposable in come for 915 POUNDS OF MEAT. In 1951, Americans spent 2fK'r. of annual income for all food. In 1970, Americans are spending a bout 1G.4-", FOR FOOD. According to the announce ment released by the ASCS Of fice, farmers will be asked to sign & certificate, before receiving a marketing card, stating that these materials were not used on their crop in the field. Those who can not certify this will have no sup port on their 1970 crop. Spittle bugs on strawberry plants can be controlled by spray ing with Malathion 25'- wettable powder at the rate of 2 table spoons per gallon of water. In using this chemical, please note that there is a 3 day waiting pe riod before the fruit is safe to harvest. Decoration There will be a decoration at the Ball Cemetery Sunday, June 14. HISTORY EXTENSION HOMEMAKERS CLUBS The North Carolina Extension Homemakers Association is ob serving its 50th anniversary this year. In cooperation with the ob sei-vanee, a series of histories of Madison County Home Demon stration Clubs will be published. I.AURKI. EH CLUB In 1'.I28 the Laurel EH Club was organized in the old Ebbs Chapel Sehool. Mrs. R. R. Ramsey was home auent. Her first lesson was how to make mayonnaise. Also, how to rook, strain and prepare baby food at home was discussed. One club member bought a pres sure tanner and a lesson on its use followed. The canner was used for 40 years by this home maker and loaned to the neigh bors, too, H still works today. Chatter members that are still living are: Mrs. Helvia Ramsey. Mrs. (Itace English and Mrs. Dock Hamsev. Mrs. Ruth Hudson, Miss Joyce Hudson and Mr. and Mrs. James Dennis Rice visited Friday eve ning with Mr. Edmond Rice and daughter, Miss Ruby Rice. Mr. Robinson, a veteran of World War 1, was a member of the vete rans of Foreign Wars. Surviving are three sons, Lu ther. Cecil and Bill Robinson, all of Asheville; a sister, Mrs. Bill Metcalf of Mars Hill; four grand children and a great-grandchild.
