The project will cover 6 miles
and will cost in the vicinity of
$3.5 million. Hawkins said the
second project will be to begin
preliminary engineering on an
extension of NC 213 from the
vicinity of Marshall to NC 209

received the approval of the
Commission's Primary Roads

recommended for adoption at
the full commission meeting
this week.
Commissioner Hawkins said
much of the credit for the
adoption of the projects must
be given to State
Representatives Liston Ramsey
and Ernest Messcr. Just last
month Hawkins, Ramsey and
Messer conducted Commission
Chairman Lauch Faircloth
through Haywood, Madison
and Yancey counties. They
pointed out the many highway
needs in Commissioner
Hawkins area to the highway
chairman.
It will be over a year before
actual construction will start
on the two projects, and
Hawkins pointed out that a
public hearing will be held on
each project before it is let to

THREE MARSHALL FIREMAN, James Penland, Floyd Davis, Jr., and Eugene Worky and
several volunteers came to the rescue of a pretty black and white cat which was stranded on the
porch roof of the Marshall Presbyterian Church on Main Street Friday afternoon. When Penland
climbed the ladder he discovered the cat was "Spot", his own pet. He carefully lured the pet
from his precarious position until he could get hold of him. Holding on to the ladder with one
hand and the cat with the other, Penland carefully came down from 30 feet above the sidewalk
and the rescue had been a success. Many interested persons, including the personnel of the
French Broad EMC, across the street, witnessed the rescue.
