Democrats Win
Democratic candidates won Freeman and W. Roy Yeager.
ver the Republican Ramsey received 3,645 votes;
candidates in all races inMesser, 3,608; Freeman,
Madison County in the 2.686: Yeaaer. 2.637.
election Nov. 3, with the
exception of Solicitor and
Coroner. Clyde M. Roberts
was unopposed in the
solicitor's race as was Bob
Davis, coroner.
In addition to the county
offices, all seven amendments
of the state constitution were
overwhelmingly approved.
In the 11th Congressional
District race, Congressman
Roy A. Taylor, incumbent,
easily defeated Republican
candidate Luke Atkinson,
4,119 to 2.414 in this
county. Taylor was also
victorious in the district. In
fact, Taylor led all candidates
in Madison County in
receiving the largest number
of votes.
In the State Senate contest
(31st District), I. C. Crawford
and Lamar Gudger defeated
incumbents R. T. (Ted) Dent
and William P. Powell.

Former sheriff E. Y.
Ponder led the Democratic
ticket (Exception, Roy
Taylor) with 3,858 votes to
Republican J. Dedrick
Brown's 2,726 votes in the
race for sheriff.
Ervin Adams, W. T. Moore
and R- Bruce Sams, were
elected county commissioners
over incumbents Carl Cody,
William C. Wilber, Jr., and
Roy McDevitt. Sams received
3,642; Adams,3,627; Moore,
3,604; Cody, with 2,754
votes, led the Republican
ticket (exception, Roberts,
solicitor); Silver, 2,722;
McDevitt, 2,705.
In the clerk of superior
court contest, Judson
Edwards defeated incumbent
C. N. Willis, Jr., 3,487 to
2.751.
Emery Metcalf received
3,652 votes to defeat
incumbent W. B. Zink, who
received 2.706 votes, for the
office of county auditor.
In the tax collector's
contest K Harold -Wallin
defeated incumbent Jinx.. F.
Craine. Wallin received 3,680

Republican Clyde M.
Roberts was unopposed in
the race for solicitor of the
24th district. Roberts
received 2,818 votes.
Bob Davis, candidate for
county coroner, was
unopposed. He received
2,178 votes.
All above figures are
unofficial. Official canvass to
be held here today
(Thursday) too late for this
issue.
BOARD OF EDUCATION
The only "undecided"
contest involves the
"Winners" in the board of
education contest, District
One (Mars Hill, Beech Glen,
Ebbs Chapel and
Grapevine-East Fork)
Mrs. Bobby Jean Peek Rice,
Democrat, received 1,208
votes and Owen Tilson,
Democrat, received 1,184
votes. Should these figures
remain at the official canvass,
Mrs. Peek would be a member
of the board. Ralph M. Lee
and Perry G. Willis,
Republicans, each received
1,201 votes (unofficial). It is
not known at this time which
of the two will be elected to
the board since they tied.

Unless a change is made in
the official canvass of votes,
it would seem that the
five-member board of
education would be
composed of Bobby Ponder,
Emery Wallin, William M.
(Bill) Roberts, Mrs. Bobby
Jean Peek Rice and either
Ralph M. Lee or Perry G.
Willis.

Pranksters
Cause Damage
To Power Line
Halloween pranksters on
this past Halloween did severe
damage to the distribution
system of French Broad
Electric Membership
Corporation, and in addition,
deprived approximately 1 200
consumers of power for
about S'A hours. "The people
who did this cut trees on the
line breaking the line down
and did not notify us as to
the location. The line crew
was forced to patrol the lines
until they could find the trees
that were across the lines," D.
M. Robinson, manager, said.
Food, Medical
Vouchers Resume
In County
Mrs. Faye Ramsey, director
of the Madison County
Emergency Food and Medical
Services Program, has
announced that funds have
been secured to operate the
program for the remainder of
the year.
Mrs. Ramsey stated that
the normal schedule of
issuing vouchers on Mondays
and Wednesdays from
Marshall and issuing vouchers
on Fridays from Hot .Springs

Service
Policies
Revised
Jack Payne, chairman, and
Mrs. Darlene R. Cody,
executive secretary, of
Madison County Local Board
No. 59 announced today that
Selective Service policies have
been revised to allow a
registrant classified in ll-S, l-S
(C), l-S(H), 1 1 -A
I I I -A( Hardship), or
lll-A(Fatherhood) to drop his
deferment in favor of a 1-A
classification, provided the
registrant requests in writing
that his current deferment be
cancelled.
This change in policy
should be of particular
interest, Mr. Payne said, to
selective service registrants
who hold 1970 lottery
numbers higher than the
highest number reached by
the board. As of Nov. 18, Mr.
Payne stated that the highest
lottery number reached by
this local board is 157.
"It is not anticipated," Mr.
Cayne added, "this this local
oard will exceed number
157 as a high for this calendar
year; therefore, it will
