April 1, 1971 Page 4 Statistics Reveal 1970 County Population, 16,003 Madison County's official population in the 1970 census was 16,003, down 7.1 per cent from the 1960 figure of 17,217, the Bureau of the Census, U. The official population of the state was 5,082,059, up 11.5 per cent from the 1960 population count, which was 4,556,155. The 1970 census counted 15,685 white persons in Madison County, 98.0 per cent of the total: 290 Negroes, and 28 persons of other races. In 1960, 99.3 per cent of the population was white. The census showed 1,136 children under 5 years; 3,520 in ages 5 through 17; 9,283 people 18 through 64; and 2,064 who were 65 and older. There were 4,936 households, with 15,713 per sons, including 582 one-person households. In addition 290 persons were living in group quarters. The 1970 census counted 5,513 housing units in Madison County, 3,524 of them occupied by owners, 1,412 occupied by tenants, and 577 vacant. These included vacant units for seasonal use. The proportion occupied by owners in 1970 was 63.9 per cent, compared with 62.3 per cent in 1960. Among year-round dwelling units there were 4,922 single family houses, 249 housing units in multi-unit buildings, and 325 mobile homes trailers. The percentage of occupied units with more than one person per room was 11.7, compared with 18.1 in 1960. Of all the occupied housing units, 2,953 had piped water, toilet, and bath, while 1,983 lacked some or all plumbing. The median value of owner occupied houses in Madison County was $8,600, compared with $5,600 in 1960. The median rent paid by tenants in 1970 was less than $30 per month, compared with $30 in 1960. Half were over and half below the median figures. These results are from two 1970 census advance reports for the state: PC(V2), general population characteristics, and HC (VI), general housing characteristics. The reports, which contain additional 1970 census data for the state and various areas within it, may be purchased at nominal prices from the Superin tendent of Documents, U. S. Government Printing Office, Washington, D. C. 20402, or from offices of the U. S. Department of Commerce in major cities.
