spent the weekend with his
parents Mr. and Mrs. Hardle
Plemmons.
We were sorry to hear of Mrs.
Hardie Plemmons being on the
sick list. We wish for her a
speedy recovery.
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Rogers
visited Mr. and Mrs. Foy Riddle
Tuesday of last week.
Most of the farmers in this
section have been setting their
tobacco and tomatoes.
Miss Cindy Massey of
Michigan is spending sometime
with her mother and brothers.
Mrs. John Riddle is spending
some time with her son, Foy
Riddle.
Those visiting Mr. and Mrs.
Foy Riddle over the weekend
were Mr. and Mrs. Roy Gene
Riddle and family of Swan
nanoa and Claude Philips.
Mrs. Foy Riddle visited Mr.
and Mrs. Verge Keener of Bluff
Sunday afternoon.
Miss Mary Sophia Wood of
Mars Hill and Stephen Forrest
Waddell of Canton, were united
in marriage Saturday, May 29,
at 3 pm in the First Baptist
Church of Canton.
The Rev. James E. Langford,
pastor of the church, performed
the ceremony. Wedding music
was by Mrs. M. A. Harvey of
Canton, organist, and Mrs. Bob
Wood of Mars Hill, sister-in-law
of the bride, vocalist.
Parents of the bride are Mr.
and Mrs. Arthur E. Wood of
Mars Hill. The bridegroom's
parents are Mr. and Mrs. Greek
F. Waddell of 8 Pasadena Ave.,
Canton.
Given in marriage by her
father, the bride was attired in a
long gown of white Bridal
Taffeta, fashioned with a yoke
of Alencon lace. The long, full
sleeves had Alencon lace cuffs,
and the skirt was sprinkled with
Alencon lace medallions. The
chapel train, falling from her
waist, had a panel of the same
lace. Her vfiil of illusion fell
from a headpiece of white
organza flowers, and she
carried a bouquet of white
glads, daisies, and peony roses.

Bridal attendants were the
bride's twin sisters, Joan and
Jean Wood of Mars Hill. Their
long gowns were of papaya
green and blue floral organza
designed with long sleeves and
jewel necklines. They wore
matching portrait hats and
carried single long-stem peony
roses.
Mr. Waddell was his son's
best man with Lt. Keith Wayne
Waddell, of Pensacola, Fla.,
brother of the bridegroom, and
Bob Wood of Mars Hill, brother
of the bride, as ushers.
Mrs. Waddell is a graduate of
Mars Hill High School and a
rising junior at Mars Hill
College where she will attend
classes this summer. Mr.
Waddell is a graduate of Pisgah
Senior High School in Canton
and was a junior at Mars Hill
College before joining the U. S.
Army. He will leave June 11 for
a extended tour in Germany.
Mrs. Waddell will join her
husband in Germany in August.
A cakecutting was held
following rehearsal on Friday
evening in the Waddell home.
Members of the wedding party
and families attended.
Lynne Baker Awarded Science
Award At M.H.S.
The annual Bausch & Lomb
Science Award was presented
May 25 to Lynne E. Baker by
Clive M. Whitt, principal of
Marshall High School.
"The Bausch & Lomb Science
Award is especially
significant," Mr. Whitt said,
"because it recognizes our
senior with the highest
scholastic standing in science
subjects."
As winner of the Award, Miss
Baker is eligible to compete for
a four-year Bausch & Lomb
Science Scholarship at the
University ofjtochesteTi N. Y.

Lynne has done outstanding
work in all her high school work
and graduated as Salutatorian
of her senior class of ft
students. She attended
Governor's School for gifted
students during the summer of
1970, and was Katherine Smith
Raynolds Scholarship finalist in
1971, receiving a tuition grant to
UNC-G. She served as class
officer and vice president of the
Beta Club during her senior
year.
Lynne is the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. J. Leonard Baker of
Walnut.

VBS Starts
Monday
Vacation Bible School will
begin at the Hopewell Baptist
Church on Monday, June 7, at
7:30 p.m. with Mrs. Hope Rice,
director, and the Rev. E. M.
Pettit, pastor.
Those assisting with the Bible
School will be Miss Geneva

Decoration
The annual decoration and
homecoming day at the
Grandview Baptist Church will
be held this Sunday, June 6. The
services start at 10 with
decorating the graves. An all
day service is planned with a
picnic lunch at noon. The Rev.
E. J. Jenkins will bring the
morning message. The af
ternoon will be devotd to special
singing and recognition of
former pastors and members.
All singers and the public are

Red Cross
News
The Asheville Area Chapter,
American Red Cross, reports
that during the month of May,
22 units of blood were collected
while 28 units were used by
residents of Madison County.
Also during May, the
American Red Cross, Service to
Military Families Department
handled four cases for Madison
County. All were for ser
vicemenone case for repor
ting and three emergency
leaves.
Miss Virginia Hart of Mars
Hill College taught a Water
Safety Instructor course at the
college to 10 students who
became Red Cross Water Safety
instructors. One student
became an instructor of
beginner swimming.
