Attended FHA
Meet In Missouri
- Mary Elizabeth Diercka of
Mart Hill returned last
Saturday from Kansas City,
Mo., where she attended the
National Meeting of Future
Homemakers of America at the
Muehtebach Hotel, July 12-15.
Mary is a member of the
Mara Hill High School FHA
Chapter and is serving as North
Carolina State FHA secretary
and District VIII president. She
was selected as one of 20 home
economics students in this state
to attend the meeting. The 1200
delegates at the meeting
represented a National FHA
membership of over half-a-million.
She reports that it was an
exciting week packed with
workshops, discussion groups,
outstanding speakers, fun time,
an evening at Kansas City's
famous Starlight Theater, and a
visit to the Truman Library at
Independence, Mo.
"The meeting theme was
'Accent on Action: Discovery.
Involvement, Growth,' " Mary
reported, "and we were given
many ideas for accomplishing
the objective 'To encourage
individuals to discover the
satisfactions gained through
personal involvement. We
heard from leaders in the
education field, had panel
discussions and audience
participation sessions during
the four days dealing with such
topics as "The Positive Ap
proach to Discovery',
'Meaningful Involvement', and
Fulfilling Personal Potential.'
In small workshops which we
called 'Digging Session' we
stressed individual growth
through personal involvement.
Mary also served as one of
North Carolina's four voting
delegates, and thus had a voice
in the election of the 1971-72
National FHA officers.
Mary pointed out that one of
the best things about the
meeting was the opportunity to
make a lot of new friends from
all across the country. "I met
girls from Oregon, Vermont,
California, Texas, and even
Puerto Rico. And, of course,"
she added, "being selected as a
delegate to attend this meeting
was a wonderful experience and
a great honor for me. I am
grateful for having had this
opportunity to represent my
Western North Carolina District
and Madison County at the
national meeting."
Mary is the daughter of Dr.
and Mrs. Fred H. Diercks of
Mars Hill.
