Sure, you worked hard all week and are entitled to a little free time And the money you're spending for recreation is what you have left over after paying for your family 's food, clothing, and other necessities. But what if the food and clothing your family needs weren't produced by somebody else and you had to provide it all yourself What would happen to your leisure time then'' Thanks to the hard work and ingenuity of the farmer, our f ood and fiber needs are so well met that we seldom give much thought to who makes it possible. A lot of us are probably in the same category as the city housewife who said her food comes "from the supermarket, of course!" In no other nation on the face of the earth do so many people depend on so few to provide their tood ana liber needs as we do in this country. Put another way, 95 per cent of us depend on the other 5 per cent of the U. S population to produce our food and fiber What it boils down to is that the well-being of American agriculture is of utmost importance to each of us. We hear talk about the Congress being "urban-oriented'' and not really deeply concerned about agriculture. If your Congressman isn't thinking seriously of how he can work effectively to improve agric tlture's role in the nation's economy, then you can ' . sure he's not thinking seriously about your future well-being. Story, Editor The News-Record Marshall. N. C. 28753 Dear Mr. Story: With reference to your correspondent Muriel Coxe's letter in the News-Record of June 21, the question at issue is not water baptism by im mersion, which is clearly taught in the inspired scrip tures and does not need to depend on the spurious verses of Mark 16:9-19 for its truth. The question at issue is whether the Bible teaches that the final sternal punishment for the willfully wicked is death, deprivation of life for all eternity, complete an nihilation, destruction, or is it preservation of life in eternal torment as taught by the false creeds of Christendom and heathendom, when men thought they did God service by burning faithful Christians at the stake in the dark ages? Those who believe in the false doctrine of eternal torment completely deny or disregard such plain statements as Gen. 2:17 "But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it; for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die." It was Satan, through the medium of the serpent who said (Gen. 3:4) "Ye shall not surely die " Who told the truth? Moses in his last words to the assembled nation of Israel before they entered the promised land declared: (Deut 30:19) "I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life, and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live." Note no word of warning concerning eternal torment! It was Ufe or death. The Apostle Paul confirms this at Rom 5:12 "Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all mentor that all have sinned." Note verse 23 "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal Ufe through Jesus Christ our Lord." Is God going to give His precious gift of Ufe to the wicked? No, He will take their life away. Believers in eternal torment cite Mark 9:43 and 44 in support of their views. "And if thy hand offend thee cut if off ; it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched. Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. " Here the word hell is a mistranslation of the Greek word GEHENNA as shown in many modern translations. This referred to the valley outside the walls of Jersualem, which was used as the city dump. Fires were kept burning there with sulphur added to make them more destructive. The dead bodies of vile criminals were denied a decent burial and were un ceremoniously thrown over the wall into this valley were their carcasses would fall into the fires to be destroyed or among the rocks where maggots would consume them Thus Jesus showed figuratively their inevitable destruction, not their preservation in torment Reference to this is made in Telephone communication today has become one of the most complicated industries in America, with over 1 25 million telephones connected by billions of feet of coble and complex switching systems. This coble takes your telephone colls cm an intricate journey through a massive technological maze. A maze that your telephone company keeps operating with thousands of Sours in maintenance and thousands of dollars in equipment And it's all worthwhile when this complex apparatus in our Central Office puts your single telephone call through . . . almost instantaneously. Isa. 66:24 where the context speaks how all mankind comes back Into harmony with God's pure worship during the thousand years of Christ's reign except the wicked. Verses 24 states "And they shall go forth, and look upon the carcases (dead bodies) of the men that have trans gressed against me, for their worm (agency of destruction not preservation) be quen ched; and they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh." Does this picture the eternal destruction of the wicked or their eternal torment? The same figure of speech is used in the highly figurative language in Rev. 20:10 "And the Devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and false prophet are tor were) and shall be tor mented day and night for ever and ever." The Greek word for tor mented is BASANIZO and is a similar word used in Matt 18:34. Here Jesus relates the story of the unjust slave whose master puts him in prison until he pays his debt. We read: "And his lord was wroth and delivered him to the tormenters ( Greek : BASANISTAIS) all he should pay all that was due unto him." Some translators: The New World Translation, Torrey's: "The Four Gospels", Weymouth's "The New Testament in Modern Speech", and others render this word JAILERS because sometimes but not always they would use torture Therefore, this passage in Revelation can properly be rendered JAILED. In other words, restrained in eternal death. That this verse is correct note Rev. 20:14 where death and hell (Greek HADES : the common grave of mankind) were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death." The Adamic death and the common grave of mankind are emptied by the resurrection (John 5:28) therefore cease to exist. The same is true of the beast and the false prophet. (Corrupt human governments and false teachers are destroyed not tormented and preserved). Study and believe God's word. Norman M. The Lord gazes down upon mankind from heaven where he lives. He has made their hearts and closely watches every thing they do. The best-equipped army cannot save a king for great strength is not enough to save anyone. A war horse is a poor risk for winning vic tories it is strong but it cannot save. But the eyes of the Lord are watching over those who fear him, who rely upon his steady love. He will keep them from death even in times of .'amine! We depend upon the Lord alone to save us. Only he can help us; he protects us like a shield. No wonder we are happy in the Lord ! For we are trusting him. We trust his holy name. Yes, Lord, let your constant love surround us, for our hopes are in you alone. Religious HrritaKc of America HEARD By The Mars Hill Ijons Club officers were installed on Tuesday night of last week at beautiful and picturesque Pisgah View Ranch, nine miles from Candler... and I was there. ..it was my first time at the Ranch and I thoroughly enjoyed the visit and the installation. ..and the family-style dinner ..gosh, what delicious food ..before dinner, Mr. and Mrs Jake Drake, "Bill" and I, and other MH Lions and I jonesses and a good time Just sitting on the beautiful lawn and talking. ..then during dinner we were entertained by Mr. Chester Cogburn, owner and operator of the Ranch... a former state senator and now a well-known lawyer, Mr. Cogburn is also a humorist whose Jokes keep the "eating customers" happy. ..it's a delightful plate to visit and I hope to return soon. ..the in stallation services were im pressive with Lion J. P. Ramsey, formerly of Marshall and now a member of the Etowah Lions Club and for mer District Governor, being the installing officer. ..he did a magnificent job and his talk on Li on ism was ex cellent . incidentally, the Mars Hill lions Club has perhaps the youngest mem bers (average) in 31-A, and the youngest new president, Alan Briggs... in fact, lion Alan is probably the youngest Lion President in North Carolina .1 want to thank the Mars Hill lions for inviting my wife and me to the meeting we enjoyed every minute of it... another occasion we thoroughly enjoyed was the wedding of Miss Rebecca Ann Sams to Mr. Richard Page Ellis Saturday afternoon in the Mars Hill Baptist Church, it was a beautiful wedding ..the bride's maids wore the most beautiful SEEN POP dresses I've ever seen and Rebecca was a "dream". ..not only did we enjoy the wedding but we also enjoyed seeing and talking to many of our friends. ..I was also invited to luncheon last Thursday at Mars Hill with Tom Shuping and Art Sakowski, Shadow line officials. ..after luncheon in the Faculty Lounge of Mars Hill College, and a nice talk with Dr. Fred Bentley, president of MHC, Tom and Art took me on a tour of the new Shadowline plant near Mars Hill. ..it isn't quite completed but it will soon be and it's located on one of the most beautiful knolls in WNC.the scenery is gorgeous and the new plant is quite massive, modern and built for the comfort convenience of its employees. ..from all in dications, Madison County is truly "On The Move". ..let's keep it going... Is it responsi ble for dditional drug ex perimentation? The Nation al Commission on Marijuana nd Drug Abuse thinks so They suggest that federal officials have been dealing more with the politics of the problem, the public alarm, than with the dilem ma itself. Perhaps this is true, for we fully suspect some poorly-planned drug Gee, this house cleaning would be fun if it didn't take such a long time! I cleaned out a closet in my dining room Friday and found about SO books I thought I had lost, and also found three of my college annuals. I sat down and looked through them and read what all my friends had said about me at that time. They were rather flattering you remember how you write in them and it pepped me up for several hours! I believe it takes more time to just enjoy what you find than to actually clean up the joint! Oh, yes, I also found some puzzles that I hadn't worked in years. I am working on one now that Gary Sprinkle brought to school one year and neglected to take back home. It is round and the most aggravating thing I have every seen! But I'm going to keep at it at odd times -until I get it done. I heard Gary got married so I expect he will come for the puzzle one of these days soon to take to his new home. He neglected to invite me to his wedding, so I'm mad at him for the oversight! I repotted my snake plant last night and it had 21 shoots if that is what one would call them -and I planted one in each of my two pots and the rest are lying in the yard waiting for anyone who wants them They require Health Clinic Schedule Iwrence B Burwell, MPH, Madison County Health Director, has announced the Health Department Clinic schedule for July, 1973. Saw Geraldine Mc Devitt at the corner grocery Johnson's, of course and she said the Baptists had one of the best schools ever. I haven't been riding my bicycle as much as I planned todo. It seems that I'm in such a hurry to run to the store and get the mail and often, it is just too cool to ride up to Verna and Knox's so I hop into the car and go. Togetherness DOUBLE DUTY The Ralph E. Briggs and Ed Ramsey families believe in doing things together. They went to the alter together in a double wedding Nov. 8, 1946, and suddenly, last Wednesday, found themselves to be grandparents together. The Briggs's daughter, Sherry Carter, wife of Ray Carter of Weaverville, gave birth to a daughter, Jolie Rae, at 1019 on Wednesday, and three later Jo Neil Mc Fee, wife of David McFee of Asheville, gave birth to a son, Gregory Ferguson. They're in the same hospital, same room, and had the same doctor. The grandmothers said their daughters have already started planning a wedding between the newborn babes. Why not?
