reviewed "Real Lace" by
Stephen Birmingham. ' In
"Real Lace" the author tells
the story of America's Irish
Catholic rich-their heroism,
their humor, their chicanery.
Families like the Mo
Donnells, Murrays, Cuddlhys,
Ryans, Buckleys, Mackays,
and O'Brians are a few of the
"Irisbtocracy", who have long
regarded themselves as First
Irish Families. Yet, In nearly
every case, their origins were
desperately humble. Fleeting
from the great Irish potato
famine in the IStO's, they
found themselves virtually
penniless in the slums of New
York and Boston. They had
ambition, courage, a fighting
spirit and perhaps most
important were endowed
with a full share of that
ingredient known as Irish
charm, and emerged out of
poverty into positions of both
social and business
