Writer The Hot Springs Alcoholic Beverage Control Board, under fire from the State ABC Board and scheduled to face a public hearing in Asheville next week, has resigned. R. W. Ponder, chairman of the three-member board that supervises Madison County's only liquor store, could not be reached for comment, but the mayor of Hot Springs verified the resignations. Mayor Joe R. Henderson said he had received the resignations of Ponder and board member Clyde Hunt singer. The third member of the board, T. A. Russell, is in the hospital, but will probably tender his resignation shortly, Henderson said. Dr. L. C. Holshouser, chairman of the state board, had requested the resignation of the Hot Springs board, but the board had refused to step down. Holshouser told Ponder in a letter May 1 that an in vestigation in recent months turned. up "many discrepancies.. .which have caused u to feel you and other members of your board can no longer be considered fit to serve on the local board." Salaries, travel and laundry expenses, the lease on the building in which the liquor . store is located, disbursement of store profits and general accounting procedures of the ' Hot Springs board are among specifics questioned by the state board. J. tii.r,l U fit., Savings And Loan Will Open Office In Mars Hill Asheville Federal Savings and Loan will open a new branch office in Mars Hill. The announcement was made by James M. Westall, president and chairman of the board of the association. The new office will be located at 1 Marshall Street (Highway 213), former site of Cody Hardware Company. A late summer opening is planned, the exact date to be announced later. Asheville Federal Savings will be the first Savings and Loan to locate in Madison or Yancey county. "We are extremely pleased to be able to serve this growing section of Western North Carolina," Westall said. "We believe there is high potential for development in Madison and Yancey, and we want to provide our support in this development." Westall explrfned that the Mars Hill site was chosen following a research study commissioned by Asheville Federal Savings. Bringing a variety of fine crafts and c rafters, Country Boutique was the largest group present Quilts, pillows, bonnets, placemats, tablecloths and wood carvings were only a few of the items present in the booth. Due to the widening of the highway, renovation of the building front on Marshall Street has been going on for several weeks. Remodeling of the interior of the building will include installation of an air conditioning system. Asheville Federal Savings will offer a full range of savings plans, including passbook and investment certificates. Savings are in sured to $20,000 by the Federal Savings and Loan Insurance Corporation. Other services, such as travellers checks, willl also be offered. Westall noted that Savings and Loans are traditionally the single largest source of home loans for building. Harold Garrison, also a demonstrator, was an out standing part of the show. Garrison demonstrated his specialty, woodshaven flowers, but his Watergate gun was the real attention-getter. Country Boutique markets products for almost 200 craftsmen. Of these, 75 per cent are low-income. Country Boutique is under the direction of Dorothy Arlington and Lonnie Burton, who ape a part of the Madlsoo r Buncombe Crimunir Action Program.
