Who s A
Newspaper
By Judy Clemens
Lapeer (Michigan) County Press
A newspaper is long hours of hard work,
Classified ads and subscriptions (that seem to go wrong no
matter how hard you try to get them right;
Stories, usually less appreciated than appreciated;
It's typing copy till your fingers are numb and your back is
breaking;
Trying to fill paper racks while people tear you apart to get at
the papers in your arms;
It's deadlines to be kept, deadlines the public can't understand.
It's display advertising, selling, promoting, layouts in the
making, running here and there to get an ad;
Building pages until you can't see straight;
Answering the phone until is becomes an automatic reflex
whenever or wherever you hear a phone ring
A newspaper is talking to an irate customer and smiling when
you know you're being abused;
It's volunteering to help when you're too tired to move,
Wanting to explode at someone because you know you're right,
but backing down politely for the sake of the newspaper;
It's people interchanging thoughts and ideas, dreams and
beliefs.
It's a proofreader's agony.
A reporter's grief.
An editor's baby,
An owner's pride;
It can be the backbone of the people or a shot in the dark;
It's mainly the satisfaction of a lot of people who care enough to
do the best they know how to get the "new impartially without
fear or favor" to the ever anxious readers;
And it comes eut than JUST a newspaper;

' i PREPARING THE WAY ' f . "
International Sunday School Lesson for December 8,1974
Scripture: Malachi 3:1-4; Matthew 3:1-12; John 1:6-8, 19-28
By The Reverend John W. Wenberg, Jr. - '
If we have ever been involved in a play or dramatic pre
sentation, we know how important it is for everything to be
properly prepared, rehearsed and publicized. This is true of
most of the things we do in life so much depends on our
preparation if something we plan to do will be successful.
Likewise, there was a stage set for the coming of Jesus.
We art reminded that Jesus came "in the fulness of time."
That is to say, when things were ready.
For several centuries Israel looked forward to a time
when God would establish a new order through a Messiah or
anointed one.
The Gospel of Matthew portrays the ministry of John the
Baptist as that of a messanger who proclaimed the coming
of the Messiah. Malachi 3:1 speaks of God sending a mes
senger who would prepare the way for the coming of the
kingdom or God, and John is also portrayed as the prophet
Elijah returned.
The message of John is that of repentance for judgment
was at hand, and John's message is a universal message
it is meant for all people.
Perhaps we can take a larger view to see the part re
pentance plays in the drama of the coming of Christ. Only
as wc are sorry for our sinfulness will we be able to recog
nize Jesus as the Messiah, the one who lives the life of
servanthood rather than royal majesty. Only as we become
aware of our imperfection can we receive Him as lord and
Savior. The Pharisees and Sadducees to whom John spoke
could not see their own need and therefore could not re
ceive Christ.
Confession and a contrite heart are part of the prepara
tion for accepting Christ as Lord. He will come to us only
as the stage is set.
