French Broad River
Beautification
As 1975 comes to a close there is one outstanding
achievement which has been partially accomplished
during the past few months That is the French
Broad River cleanup.
Instead of unsightly beer cans, trash, all types of
litter, heavy weeds and brush which hid the view of
the river from motorists, one can now enjoy the
beauty of the French Broad River from the highway
Not only has Clarence Gunter and his crew done a
magnificent job on the highway side of the river but
are also cleaning up the banks on the railroad side
The neatly trimmed and cleaned banks add greatly
to the beauty of the river which before the project
was started, went unnoticed.
This beautification also extends in Buncombe
County where Buncombe crews are at work daily
We congratujfltteboth crews for a job well done
The plan actually calls for clearing along the river
banks to the Tennessee State Line - that is, if Title X
funds from the TV A continues.
At the November 24 Council meeting of the Land
of-Sky Regional organization, a motion was offered
by Madison County Commission Chairman James
Ledford "to seek further funding from TVA to
continue the cleanup of the French Broad River
Basin (including major tributaries) throughout the
Region." This motion was seconded and
unanimously approved.
TVA and the Congress will be influenced by the
support shown through letters from local govern
ments, civic groups and citizens.
Your assistance in this will be beneficial

ASSISTS CHILDREN
Dear Editor:
The Child Advocacy Section
of the North Carolina Office
for Children is asking for your
help.
Our office assists many
individuals each month but we
feel there are many more

not getting it. We want these
people to know we are
available for consultation or
assistance
The Office for Children tries
to help children with problems

disturbances to transportation
or eveii financial problems. If
we can not help the child, we
will put him and-or his family
touch with someone who can..
There are four regional
offices in North Carolina and
within the regions there are
field consultants assigned to
each county.
The field consultant in your
area will visit with you in the
near future and give you mure
information about the Office

MARSHALL'S
CHRISTMAS
I'ACFANT
Dear Jim
It's good
Marshall is
to know that
resuming the
Christmas Pageant
Certainly amid all the sham
and glamour of the world's
Christmas there is such a need
of the reminder of what
Christmas is all about The
fact that this son of the virgin
came to die a death for us
gives a hope and a realization
of what life really means.
Marshall, as all towns large
and small, has its sordid side
But this pageant portraying
the Nativity story lifts up
those who participate and
those who see it to a
recognition that the real
purpose of life is Cod's offer of
pardon and enteral life which
is still available to whosoever
will.

Class Ring Found After
Being Lost 34 Years
Mis Dempsey Woody, of
the Hluff community of
Madison County, wrote the
following story received here
this week:
"Here is something I must
tell you:
'34 years this past Spring I
lost my class ring in the
tobacco patch. Dempsey and I
always looked for it whenever
we worked that patch of
ground
"About three weeks ago I
saw a ring laying on the
sewing machine with other
items from Eugene's pocket. I
picked the ring up and saw it
was a class ring and thought
that it looks like mine if I
remembered it right. But it
can't be, I thought. I took it to
a light and saw 1940 on it I had
chills all over but was afraid
to look at the initials on the

H K W and knew it was mine
But how come it was here''
As soon as Eugene came
home I met him and asked

As Truck Fire Suspect
Three arrests have been
made in connection with the
Oct. 30, 1974, fire which did
$37,500 damage to five diesel
truck tractors at the Charlotte
Highway headquarters of
Fredrickson Motor Express
Corp., according to Asheville
Police Chief J. C. Hall.
Hall identified the three
men arrested as Raymond
Chandler, 40, of Mars Hill;
James Herbert King, 41, of 218
Broadway; and Wayne V.
Morrow, 33, formerly of 287 E.
Chestnut St., presently ser
ving a six-year sentence at the
Department of Correction
camp in Avery County, having
been convicted of unlawful
burning.
Chandler is employed by
Fredrickson Motor Express
Corp., Hall said, and was
arrested there. He said King,
who is not employed, was
arrested at his mother's
home, 89 Montford Ave.,
Asheville. Detective U. Fred
W. Hensley and Detective
Bobby I.. Medford made the
arrests.
Charges against the three
men are identical, Hall said,
with each charged with five
counts of felonious burning of
personal property Chandler
and King were both being held
Tuesday night of last week in
the Buncombe County Jail. A
spokesman at the jail said
Chandler's bond had been set
at $25,000 while King's had not
yet been set
According to Chief Hall, the
case had been under in
vestigation for more than a
defendant of the charge
Court is still in progress as
the deadline for this issue
approaches.
