Discuss the news stories you will be reading in your newspaper. PAGE 3: THE KEYNOTE SPEAKERS: Discuss the key note speakers. Find their states on a map of the United States. Talk about the jobs of the different committees. PAGE 4: WHAT IS THE PROBLEM? Ask the children to look at the pictures and decide what the problems are. The people with votes who are going to the convention. The number of dele gates each state or-territory can send is decided by a special plan. The states and territories pick their own delegates. Alternates ? the people who can take the place of the delegates if necessary. Delegation ? a group of delegates. The dele gates from each state sit together in the con vention auditorium. Where all the delegates sit or stand in the meeting place is called the convention floor. Unpledged delegates?delegates who are free to vote for any candidate. Pledged delegates?delegates who must vote for certain candidates. Keynote speeches ? the "kick-off" speeches made by important members of the parties. The speeches express the parties' ideals and are really "pep talks." To poll the delegations ? to find out how each member of the delegation would like to vote. This is usually done by the chairperson or leader of the delegation who reports the re sults.
