Population
Increases
i
?
. .Recent surveys conducted
by North Carolina Wildlife
Resources Commission
biologists indicate that more
doves are present in most of
the state than is normal for this
time of year. And, barring,
unforeseen catastrophes or an
early migration, they should '
still be around for the fall
hunting season.
Commission biologists
conduct a dove survey, in
cooperation with the U. S. Fish ,
and Wildlife Service, between
the 20th and 30th of May each
year. Information obtained
from the survey is sent to the
Fish and Wildlife Service
research laboratory in Laurel,
Md., where it is compiled with
similar information from the
other southeastern states.
Their computers analyze the
information and give a
projection of the size of the fall
dove population for the
southeastern region. That
information is then used as a
basis for setting hunting
season dates and bag limits for
the region
North Carolina biologists
theorize that the increased
number of doves in North
Carolina is a result of this
year's unusually warm spring.
The local doves started mating
earlier and the survival rate of
their young was higher due to
the unusually warm weather.
