The wonder both referred to was a result of a siege of rheumatic fever in the Army during World War I which left the valves in his heart seriously damaged. He was told by Army doctors that he probably would not live beyond his 25th birthday, but thanks to his taking care of himself and help from Veterans Administration Hospitals, Chapman lived to be 77. "I've got batteries in my watch to tell me what time it is," he said in the June in terview. "I've got batteries in my ear to help me hear, and I've got batteries in my heart to keep me ticking. I.run on batteries." Although he was considered by the government to be totally disabled since 1920, Chapman lived a relatively normal life. He earned a mortician's degree at Southern California soon after World War I and worked in Pasadena as a mortician until 1952. "They kept a regular check on me at the VA hospitals there," he said, "and they sent me to Palm Springs to take baths in that sulphur water. I took glycerin tablets and things like that all the time ? and I just kept going." Chapman moved to Hen dersonville and took the job as superintendent of Shepherd Memorial Park in Hen dersonville, until his retirement in 1965. Two years before his retirement, he had open heart surgery at the VA hospital in Asheville when surgeons in stalled a pacemaker in his heart.
