Heard And Seen By POP The roar of equipment up and down Main Street continues as workmen install new water lines... it's a big job and requires many man hours of hard work... the noise is terrific and the inconvenience of broken pavement up and down the street isn't pleasant... but... when the project is com pleted and Main Street is resurfaced and widened, we'll be in fine shape and proud of the improvement... one Hot Springs man who came in to renew his paper asked if they were making a tobacco field out of Main Street... I told him things were rough now but someday we were going to reap the harvest and all this ice, snow and dust would be a thing of the past... everyone will be glad when winter finally ends and con tinuous warm weather will arrive. Have you noticed the street decorations for Christmas are down?... the weather has been so terrific it's taken a long time to get 'em down but things are finally getting back to normal. Nearly every Sunday at church someone asks me if I'm still "coasting out of gear" when ice covers the roads... I tell them that I still do... along with many others who've told me they do the same thing... one school official told me a few days ago that he tried his car in neutral coming down his private drive a few mornings ago and made it "safe and sound"... he said he decided to try this method when his car started to slide all over the road and found out that "it works"... oh well, enough of this driving advice... do it the way you think is best... frankly, I'll be glad when warm a eather gets here and we don't have to worry about sliding and chains. The fund drive for the Marshall-Walnut Medical Center has been extended... be ready to make a contribution and you'll feel better. DR. REESE STEEN, of Mars Hill, State Board Member of the American Cancer Society, is pictured here with (left to right) Lane Brown, vice-chairman of Crusade, Dr. and Mrs. Marlin Perkins, hosts of the award winning "Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom" TV series, and Sen . George Wood, State Crusade chairman. Dr. and Mrs. Perkins are the National American Cancer Society co chairmen for Crusade and spoke at the Society's mid-winter conference in Raleigh, at which over 350 volunteers from across the state attended. Madison County Crusade Chairman Ronnie Wallin, coach at Madison High School, accepted the position because of his deep concern for the immediate need to control cancer and the necessity to help win the war against cancer through the annual Education-Funds Crusade. CLIFTON METCALF, grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Metcalf of the Beech Glen community, took first prize in the physical science category at Tuscola High School's science fair in Waynesville. Metcalf will represent Tuscola at the Southeastern Science and Engineering Fair at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville April 6-8. Metcalf's entry explored the Star Wars-like theoretical phenomenon of life energy through a process called Kirlian photography. Die process uses a high voltage electrical spark in place of usual photographic light sources. It reveals a strange glow around objects that can't otherwise be seen. Its discoverer found, bizarrely, that the glow doesn't change, even when the object it surrounds does. The photographed outline of a hand with a finger missing still shows the glowing outline of a complete hand. What is it? Conventional theories suggest radiation or magnetic energy. Metcalfs ex periments, "Kirlian Aura: is it radiation?", proved to him that it is not radiation. Metcalf is in clined to believe it's life energy but adds that nobody knows for sure.
