competition of the annual
Western North Carolina Com
munity Development Pro
gram.
Nearly 100 rural and subur
ban areas have participated in
the year-round beautification
project this year. Sixteen com
munities will represent their
respective counties in this
week's judging finals.
This year's judging team in
cludes Mrs. Jean Webb, ex
ecutive director. Quality For
ward, Asheville; Steve Hen
dricks, landscape architect,
N.C. National Forests; and
Harry G. Silver, retired
district extension supervisor
and horticultural specialist of
Weaverville.
Wednesday, the judging
team will begin its tour of
county finalists starting at 9
a.m. with a visit to Stony
Knoll, representing Polk
County. From there, the team
will travel to Barker Heights
in Henderson County,
Williamson Creek in Tran
sylvania County, Cashiers in
Jackson County, and finish the
day at Cullasaja in Macon
County.
Thursday's schedule begins
at 8:30 a.m. with a visit to
South Hominy in Buncombe
County, then to North Hominy
in Haywood County, Yellow

The two leading characters,
* Ginny Hargrove, who plays
the part of Helen Keller, and
Joan Robb, who {days the
part of Anne Sullivan, are
convincing in the physical and
psychological struggles in
breaking the communication
barrier.
The Lions are encouraging
chruches to organize and
provide transportation for
youth groups to visit Asheville
and attend the performance.
The play has been on
Broadway and national
television.
The Lions objectives ? to
provide clean entertainment
that Is educational and in
spirational are met by this
play. It is a play that should
be seen by the youth of our
area.
All profits from the per
formance will go to the
Marjorie McCune Memorial
Center for the Handicapped
located in Black Mountain.
The cast, made up entirely
of Haywood County residents,
have worked long and hard
under the expert direction of
| Miss Earp, and deaerves the

WNC Beautiful, for organiza
tions and groups other than
community clubs, will be held
in early September. Eleven
county winners, representing
Buncombe, Burke, Haywood,
Henderson, Jackson,
McDowell, Macon, Madison,
Polk-Rutherford and Tran
sylvania counties, are com
peting in this division. Judging
in this division will be dooe
from standard report books
completed by the competitors,
rather than by on-site inspec
tion.
