County Deaths And Funeral Services Mrs. Ebbs Margaret Ramsey Ebbs, 57, of. South Spring Street, died Dec. 23 in a Knoxville, Tenn., hospital. A lifelong resident of Madison County, she was a daughter of the late Paul F. and Nola Belle Johnson Ramsey. Surviving are her husband, Jack Ebbs; four sons, Timothy, Sidney and Eddie Ebbs of the home; five daughters, Sarah Stills of Newport, Tenn., Janet Kellett of Knoxville, Judy Cook and Catherine Stills of Hot Springs and April Ebbs of the home; four brothers, Horace Ramsey of Clarksville, Va., David Ramsey of Pine Grove, Pa., John Ramsey of Ganboa, Panama, and Bill Ramsey of Newport; four sisters, Kay Waldrop of Newport News, Va., Shelby Woody of New Castle, Ohio, Delaine Roberts of Johnson City, Tenn., and Motelle Gregory of Maryville, Tenn. ; 13 grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Services were held at 2 p.m. Dec. 26 in Hot Springs First Baptist Church. The Rev. Ar thur Ammons and the Rev. O.W. Harer officiated. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery. Bowman Funeral Home was in charge. Rev. Allen The Rev. Zenous Tate Allen, 71, of Route 2, Mars Hill died unexpectedly Dec. 22 at his residence. A retired carpenter and minister, he was a native of Yancey County. He was a son of the late Clausel and Rozann Edney Allen and was a member of Bald Mountain Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Pansey Radford Allen; a daughter, Shirley Mace of Mars Hill; a son, Richard Allen of Balitmore, Md. ; four sisters, Blanche Metcalf of Marshall, Annie Forester of Kings Mountain, Vaudie Wheeler of Canton and Vivian Gardner of Mars Hill; a brother, Paul Allen of Burn sville; and three grand children. Services were held at 2 p.m. Dec. 24 in the chapel of Capps Funeral Home, Mars Hill. The Rev. Cline Honeycutt and the Rev. Frances Radford of ficiated. Burial was in the Radford Cemetery. Mrs. Jarvis Maude Tillery Jarvis, 91, of 124 Flint St., died Dec. 22 in Haywood County Hospital after a brief illness. A native of Mars Hill, she had lived most of her life in Buncombe County. She was a member of the Cumberland Avenue Baptist Church and was the daughter of the late George and Lula Hunter Tillery. Surviving are a daughter, Lucille Rogers of Asheville; two sisters, Alma Worley of Canton and Thelma Burgess of Virginia ; two brothers, Roy Tillery of Mars Hill and Fred Tillery of Lavonia, Mich. ; and several nieces. Services were held at 3 p.m. Dec. 23 in the West Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Jack Guffy and the Rev. Ron Brown officiated. Burial was in West Memorial Park. Mrs. Porche Janie English Porche, 88, of Route 3, Mars Hill died Dec. 24 in an Asheville hospital after an extended illness. A native and lifelong resi dent of Madison County, she was the daughter of the late Lee and Elizabeth McGee English and the wife of the late John W. Porche. Surviving are a son. Max Pore e of Asheville; a sister. Althea Burnett* of Weaver - ville; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Service* were held at 2 p.m. Dec. 27 in the Mara Hill Bap tist Church, of which she was a member. The Rev. Richard Price and the Rev. Jay Blankenship officiated. Burial was in Mara Hill Cemetery. Capps Funeral Home was in charge. \ ? . Mrs. Basnight Mrs. Leta Jo Allman Basnight, 61, died unexpected ly Dec. 22 at her home in Clearwater, Fla. Graveside services were held at Sylvan-Abbey Cemetery in Clearwater, at 1 p.m., Dec. 24. She is survived by her hus band, Thomas Basnight; and a son, Ralph Basnight, both of Clearwater. A native of the Laurel Branch section of Madison County, Mrs. Basnight was the daughter of the late Eugene and Bonnie Buckner Allman. She was a graduate of Mars Hill College and East Carolina Teachers College (now East Carolina University) at Greenville, N.C. She taught school for several years in Oriental, N.C., prior to mov ing to Washington, D.C. where she was employed by an in surance company. The Basnights moved to Clearwater several years ago when Mr. Basnight retired from the Washington Police Department due to ill health. Oscar Massey Oscar Massey, 62, of 710 Cherokee Ave., Black Moun tain, died Dec. 23 in an Asheville hospital after a long illness. A native of Madison County, he had lived in Black Moun tain most of his life. He was a retired employee of Singer Kearfott Inc. and attended Blue Ridge Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Elsie Rollins Massey; three daughters, Evelyn Cordell of Black Mountain, Margaret Allison and Mrs. Dale Allison of Charlotte; two sons, Jimmy Massey of Charlotte and Jerry Massey of the home; the mother, Sophronia Crowe Massey of Black Mountain; four sisters, Mary Rollins, Pauline Parker and Martha Parker and Jannie Marlowe of Black Mountain; three brothers, Herman Massey of Atlanta, J. P. Massey of Hollywood, Ala., and Hubert Massey of Charlotte; and five grandchildren. Services were held at U a.m. Dec. 26 in Homers Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. The Rev. Arnold Clark, the Rev. Luther Spivey, the Rev. Harry Mince and the Rev. George Reynolds officiated. Burial was in Mountain View Memorial Park. Miller Funeral Home was in charge. Mrs. Payne Vennie Payne, 80, of Main Street, Marshall, died Dec. 26 in an Asheville rest home following an extended illness. A lifelong resident of Madison County, she was the wife of Hubert Payne, who died in 1971. Surviving are two grand children and several nieces and nephews. Services were held at 11 a.m. Dec. 28 in the chapel of Bowman Funeral Home. The Rev. J.B. Shetley officiated. Burial was in Payne's Chapel Cemetery. Teddy Kilpatrick Teddy Hampton Kilpatrick, 73, of the Route 4 New Leicester Highway, Asheville died Dec. 21 in Asheville VA Medical Center following a short illness. A native of Madison County and a resident of Buncombe County for the past SO years, he was formerly employed by Ed Atkinson Lumber Co. He attended Temple Baptist Church and was a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Army. He was a member of VFW Post No. 891. He was the son of the late James Jackson and Jennie Wallin Kilpa trick. Surviving are his wife, Margaret Ruth Stillwell Kilpatrick; two daughters, Mary Frances Carter and Elaine Hedmon of Asheville; a half brother, Robert Jackson Kilpatrick of Candler ; and two grandsons. Services were held at 2 p.m. Dec. 23 in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home. The Rev. Joe R. Olachea of ficiated. Burial was in Green Hills Cemetery. Chandler Phileman Chandler, 62, of Route 4, Marshall died Dec. 21 in an Asheville hospital after an extended illness. A native and lifelong resi dent of Madison County, he was a retired employee of the Hartford Tweed Lumber Co. in Marshall. He was also a farmer. He was the son of Vesta Cutshall Chandler of Marshall and the late James Chandler. Surviving in addition to the mother are a daughter, Mary Edith Crowe of Marshall ; three brothers, Daniel, Ernest and the Rev. William Chandler of Marshall; a sister, Mrs. Edmond Rice of Marshall; and two grand children. Services were held at 2 p.m. in the Easter Gap Baptist Church, of which he was a member. The Rev. Gerald Sprinkle, the Rev. J. A. Griffin and the Rev. Carroll Coffey of ficiated. Burial was in Rice Cove Cemetery. Bowman Funeral Home was in charge. Mrs. Rice Eunice Metcalf Rice, 83, of Route 3, Mars Hill died Dec. 28 at her residence after an ex tended illness. A native and lifelong resi dent of Madison County, she was a daughter of the late Arcemus and Zonie English Metcalf. She was the wife of the late R.S. Rice. Surviving are two daughters, Malinda Carter and Mildred Davis of the home; two sons, Roy Rice of Mars Hill and Alfred "Be" Rice of Erwin, Tenn.; two sisters, Zelda Bowden of Sum merfield and Mrs. Effa Burnette of Mars Hill; a brother, Carter Metcalf of Mars Hill; and a grand daughter and a great grandson. Services were held at 2 p.m. Dec. 31 in the Little Creek Baptist Church, of which she was a member. The Rev. E.W. Jenkins and the Rev. Jake Fender officiated. Burial was in Justice Cemetery. Capps Funeral Home was in charge. M. R. English Manley Robert English, 75, of Lehigh Acres, Fla., died unexpectedly Dec. 26 in Lehigh Acres. A native of Madison County he was a son of the late William and Mary Jane Met calf English. He was a former police chief in Warren, Ohio. Surviving are his wife, Max ine English; a daughter, Julia Ann English of Lehigh Acres; a son, Charles English of War ren; six sisters, Nola Dill of Asheville, Katie Moore of Warren, Lela Hampton of Lin colnton, Carrie Luther and Nova Shook of Mars Hill and Gertrude Jones of Emporia, Va.; and five brothers, Melton and Lewis English of Warren, Carl English of Florence, S.C., Luther English of Colonial Beach, Va., and Leonard English of Escado, Ore. Services and burial were held Dec. 29 in Lehigh Acres. Memorials may be made to the heart fund.
