I Patriot Varsity Baseball Team Is Gathering Strength ?

Madison High's varsity
baseball team began its
season March 26 with a game
against Owen, at Owen. Tt>e
score was *-0 at the bottom of
the third inning in favor of
Owen and although the
Patriots couldn't catch up,
Jeff Baldwin pitched the last
four innings and allowed the
Warhorses no more runs. The
final score remained 4-0.
The next game was played
at North Buncombe on March
31. Tim Clark pitched an ex
cellent game, allowing the
Black Hawks only two hits.
Mars Hill
Softball
Tournament
The Rookies women's soft
ball team will hold a double
elimination tournament on
May 17-18 or, in case of rain,
May 24-25 in Mars Hill. En

Patriots no bits though, which
kept the score at M.
The Patriots played Mit
chell at home April I and Tim
Merrill pitched for the win by
striking out nine batters. Bob
by Frisby, Kevin Barnette,
Roger Tweed and Tim Wilde
got a hit each for a winning
score of 3-2.
Madison played West
Henderson at home April 3,
and though Tim Wilde allowed
only three hits and struck out
four batters, two critical er
rors in the game accounted for
the Patriot loss. David Massey
was Madison's leading hitter
with two hits while Steve Fish,
Andrew Anderson, Lonnie
Kent and Tim Merrill hada hit
apiece. The final score was
3-1.
Madison traveled to Mt
Heritage April 17. Tim Wilde
pitched, allowing four hits.

were on a school trip and
unable to play while three er
rors contributed to the Patriot
loss. Roger Tweed had two
hits while Andrew Anderson,
Steve Pish and Bobby Prisby
had one hit each for a final
score of 3-2.
Madison Girls Win 2 Of 3
On Thursday, April 17, the
Madison Patriot girls softball
team rallied in the eighth inn
ing to win 10-8 at Mountain
Heritage. Singles by Holly
Hough and Maria Reese plus a
double by Peggy Sexton pro
duced the two winning runs.
Holly, Maria, Peggy and
Janice Plemmons each had
two hits. Vickie Bailey and
Susie Davis hit the first home
runs of the season for the
Patriot girls.
On Tuesday, April 22,
Madison won their second
straight extra-inning game
24-19 in the ninth inning with a
six-run rallv. Walks to Holly
Hough and Maria Reese plus
hits by Sandy Franklin and
Janice Plemmons followed by
Peggy Sexton's second home
run of the game produced the
first five runs. The last run
scored following walks to Tina
Carter, Susie Davis and Janet
Reed. Susie had four hits while
Holly and Sandy hit three
each. One of Sandy's hits was
a home run. Cindy Shelton was
the winning pitcher.
The girls were beaten by
Owen 5-1 on Friday, April 25
after having won four games
in a row. Owen scored a run in
the third and Madison tied it
on hits by Janice Plemmons,
Peggy Sexton and Tina Carter
plus a sacrifice fly by Susie
Davis. Then Owen scored four
runs in the seventh to win the
game. Tina led the hitting by
Madison with two hits.
After seven games, Holly is
batting .591; Sandy and Tina
.455; Etiska Bishop .400; Cin
dy .346; Linda Ray, Maria,
aujfie ,M3; and Janice .300.
The Madison team overall is
batting .348. Teh games this
week are against North Bun
combe at Walnut and on Fri
day at Mitchell. Previously,
the girls lost to North Bun
combe 9-6 and beat Mitchell
16-5.
Hendersonville hosted the
Patriots April 22 Jeff Baldwin
took the Ion for Madison, at
the bottom of the second inn
ing. Hendersonville scored six
runs and with seven errors,
the Patriots couldn't catch up.

with three hits, Kevin
Barnette had two and Roger
Tweed, Andrew Anderson,
Bobby Frisby, Tim Merrill
and Ronnie Kent had one
each. The final score was 9-5.
Owen came to Madison
April 25 and the Patriots made
sure it was a closer game the
second time around but still
lost 5-3. Tim Wilde was the los
ing pitcher, giving up nine hits
but striking out four. The
leading hitters yere Kevin
Barnette, Steve Pish, Andrew
Anderson, Tim Merrill and
Tim Wilde with a hit each. A
Patriot error in the first inning
gave Owen one run and
Madison tied it up in the bot
tom of the second. But a walk
and a base hit tor Own la tha
top of the third allowed four
rum and Madison coukkit
catch up.
Madison's record is now 14
but Coach Jack Brown seat
improvement with each gam*

day of playing time, the team j
is improving. The boys have |
had good attitudes the whale
season and Coach Brown says
it looks very encouraging for
