The following is a collaboration of
thoughts from many friends of
Thora Worley McElroy who died
recently. Mrs McElroy was the
daughter of Mr and Mrs. T R.
Worley of Little Pine, the wife of
Pender McElroy and the
daughter-in-law of Dr .and Mrs.
McElroy of Marshall. The article

To be vibrantly alive and to
be Thora McElroy were
synonymous. Alive with en
thusiasm and commitment...
as a wife and parent, as a
friend and neighbor and as a
servant to her church and
community.
Alive with commitment...
To further quote Dr. Gilmore
in his letter to Thora's family:
"She assumed the chairman
ship of the Charlotte
Mecklenburg Council on Ag
ing earlier than she had an
ticipated, and at a time when
we were struggling to find a
new image and a new strength
in our reorganized structure.
Her vision, wisdom and tact,
combined with an infectious
enthusiasm and unbounded
energy, inspired and guided us
to new initiatives which are
only now beginning to ac
complish what she had envi
sioned."
Alive with energy... Thora
was constantly doing, going,
giving and planning. Each day
was a celebration, a new
adventure, an opportunity to
learn, to experience, and to
move on to new goals. She met
each new challenge with a
sense of spirit and tireless
energy, whether baking
bread, sewing, selling real
estate or calling to check on
friends. Good foods, good
friends and lots of laughter
were essential ingredients in
Tbora's life.
Alive with love ...The true
"valuables" in her life were
her husband, Pender, her
children, Ted and Chuck, her
work, both volunteer and pro
fessional, her Meads and her
church. If we measure a life in
love, she gave and received a
