West Madison V.F.D. Fair
The West Madison Volunteer Fire Depart
ment Firemen's Fair will be held on Sept. 3 at 2
p.m. on the Spring Creek Flats. Bingo, Rides,
Music, Food, and Beverages will be available.
Proceeds will help the department purchase
fire-fighting equipment.
Walnut School Reunion
There will be a Walnut School reunion on
Saturday, Aug. 13 at the school in the Walnut
Community beginning at 3 p.m. with a picnic
supper at 5:30 p.m. All former students and
teachers are invited. Cold drinks will be on sale
at the school. Each person is asked to bring

Optimists To Host
Softball Tournament
Entries are now being received for the
Madison Central Optimist Club's softball tour
nament Sept. 2, 3, and 4 at Beech Glen field.
Entries, with a fee of $65 per team, will be
received up to Aug. 31. Teams are to furnish
their own balls.
Tournament proceeds will be used for the
Optimist Club's youth work. Further informa

Folk Benefit Friday Night
The second annual benefit concert for
Mountain Folk will be held Friday evening at
7:30 p.m. at the Canton Armory on Penland
Street in Canton. This year's concert will
feature folk musicians David Holt, Jan David
son, Timmy Abell, Don Jackson, Sheila Rice
Barnhill, Liz and Lynn Shaw, and the Hominy
Valley String Band with the Pisgah Pickers.
Tickets are $3.00 for adults and $2.00 for
children. The proceeds will go to Mountain
Folk, a non-profit organization dedicated to
perpetuating mountain folk culture. For more

Food Stamp Office Cuts Back
Due to the number of persons using the cer
tification sites in Hot Springs and Mars Hill, the
Food Stamp Office will cut back the number of
days they are in these areas for application and
recertification purposes
Effective Sept. 1, an eligibility worker will
be at Hot Springs the first and second Wednes
day from 1 to 3:30 p.m., and at Mars Hill the
first and second Thursday from 9 to 11 :30 a.m.
of each month.
Marshall H.S. Reunion
The Marshall High School Class of 1958 will
hold their 25th class reunion on Aug. 13. Open
house will be held on the Island from 1-5 p.m.
and will be followed by dinner at Madison High
School beginning at 7 p.m. Cost for dinner will
be $10 per person. All class members are en
couraged to attend.
Correction
The termination of Charles
Sexton due to a cutback in
funds was seconded by James
Penland of the Marshall
Board of Aldermen, not by
Sexton himself, as stated in
last week's paper.
