Founders' Day recognizes he several men who joined ogether to estabHsh Mars Hill ollege in 1856 and supported : through its initial years. The elebration of the school's eginnings has been tradi lonally scheduled on or near (ctober 12, the birthday of Ed ward Carter, contributor of lie land on which the college >as established. Terrell, who was the main peaker for the morning's ac ivities, is a native of Western Jorth Carolina, born and eared in Sylva. He joined the isheville Citizen's sports lepartment in 1949. He lecame sports editor in 1966, news editor in 1987, and associate editor in 1972. He began writing his general in terest column in 19C7. Terrell has won several awards during his career, in cluding the N. C, Press Association's award for feature writing, an Associated Press award in their annual enterprise story contest, and was the 1980 recipient of the WNC Historical Association's achievement award for 'Grandpa's Town," a book about Asheville during the period from 1900 to World War I. He has authored six other books, traveled extensively in the Middle East and Europe, and has been a member of the Billy Graham team since 1977. Four high school guidance counselors will also receive distinguished service awards for their efforts in recruiting students for Mars Hill. They include Mrs. Pauline Wright Putnam, who recently retired from Central Cabarrus School in Concord. A native of Kings Mountain, she is a graduate of Mars Hill, Class of 1939. She is a member of Mars Hill's board of Advisors and presi dent of an alumni chapter in her area. Her other activities include membership in the Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority, the Business and Professional Women's Club, the N. C. Association of Educators, the Association of Psychological Examiners, the Home Exten sion Agency, and the McGill Baptist Church where she has been a Sunday School teacher and held several offices in the Women's Missionary Society. Mrs. Maxcine Shope Williams is director of the federal programs and com munity schools for Graham County. She is a Kobbinsville native and earned her undergraduate and master's degrees from Western Carolina University. In her dual role, she seeks grants to promote the humanities and cultural events such as the re cent Smoky Mountain Heritage Festival, as well as assisting the community to utilize the public school facilities for community events ranging from pre school to senior citizens ac tivities. She is a member of over 25 different committees and organizations including the WNC Tomorrow Board of Directors, NC 2000 chairper son for Graham County, the Governor's Highway and iTansportation Commissions. the Governor '? Council (or Job Training, the Planning Board for the new public library in Kobbinsville, and a member of the Mountain Creek Baptist Church. Mrs. Cheryl Buchanan Pap pas has been a guidance counselor at Independence High School in Charlotte in the past five years. A 1970 graduate of Mars Hill, she earned her master's degree from UNC-Charlotte. A native of Newland, she served as organist for the Newland First Baptist Church until recently when she and her family became members of the Pro vidence Baptist Church in Charlotte. Mrs. Kuth Barton Pullium was a guidance counselor at Andrews High School for 16 years. A native of Marble, she earned both her undergraduate as well as her master's degree from Western Carolina University. Her cur rent educational service assists students in selecting their vocational interests, and helps them apply to college and for financial aid. She is a member of the Andrews Methodist Church, the AALW, and the Friends of the Library. . MR. & MRS. OTUS PONDER Mr. & Mrs. Otus Ponder of Mars Hill were honored with a drop-in reception on October 2, 1983 at Trinity Baptist Church F ellowship Hall, Mars Hill in celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary. They have two children, June Phillips of Lasley, S.C. and Lucile Sprinkle of Marshall. The reception, with all friends and relatives invited, was given by their children and grandchildren, Steven Phillips of Greenville, S.C., Sharon Hunsucker and Kevin Phillips of fcasley, S.C. and Brad Sprinkle of Marshall.
