Harry Winner
Funeral services were held
Sunday for Harry Winner of
Asheville who died F riday in a
local hospital at the age of 73.
He was the father of State
Senator Dennis Winner and an
Asheville businessman and
civic leader for many years.
Services were held in Tem
ple Beth Ha-Tephila with Rab
bi Ronald Bluming officiating.
Interment was conducted in
Riverside Cemetery.
Winner was a former
member of the board of direc
tors of First Union National
Bank, the Orthopedic
Hospital, the Blue Ridge Men
tal Health Clinic, the United
Way and the Asheville
Chamber of Commerce. He
was a former director of
Asheville Country Day School
and the Crippled Children's
League and served on the Bun
combe County Jury Commis
sion.
Surviving are his wife,
Julienne Marder Winner, two
sons, state Sen. Dennis Winner
of Asheville and Robert Win
ner of Nashville, l'enn., a
daughter, Leslie Winner ?f
Charlotte, a brother, Hymie
Winner of Savannah, Ga, a
sister, Sadye Shonfield of
Savannah, and three grnad

Clifton Cook
Funeral services were held
Friday for Clifton Cook of
F orks of Ivy who died Nov. 9 in
the Asheville VA Medical
Center at the age of S8. Ser
vices were held at the F orks of
Ivy Baptist Church, of which
he was a member, with the
Revs. Gordon Ball, fc. S.
Morgan and J. H. Smith of
ficiating. Burial was con
ducted in the church
cemetery. Military graveside
rites were conducted by the
Mars Hill Memorial Post of
the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Mr. Cook was a native of
Madison County and a resi
dent of Buncombe County
most of his life. He was a son
of Mettie Shelton Cook and the
late Starling Cook. He served
as a sheriff's deputy for both
the Buncombe County and
Madison County Sheriff's
Departments for many years.
He is survived by his wife,
Violet Mashburn Cook; two
daughters, Jennifer Cook of
the home and Rebecca
English of Weaverville; a
sister, Jean Wendell of
Weaverville; two brothers,
Glenn Cook of Asheville and
Ralph Cook of Leicester, and a
granddaughter.

Monday for Stephanie Kenee
Kice, eight-month old
daughter of Doyle and Donna
Payne Rice of Koute 6, Mar
shall, who died Saturday at
the home of an aunt, Mrs.
Terry Chandler of Marshall.
Services were held in the
Walnut Creek Baptist Church
with the Rev. Gerald Sprinkle
officiating. Burial was con
ducted in the Gunter family
cemetery.
Surviving, in addition to her
parents; are a brother, Shane
Rice of the home; her paternal
grandparents, Elisha and Zula
Gunter Rice of Marshall; her
maternal grandmother,
Pauline Randall Payne of
Marshall ; her paternal great
grandparents, Oliver and
Elman Norton Gunter of Alex
ander, and her maternal
grandmother, Gladis Randall
of Marshall.
James Ray
James Clyde Ray, formerly
of Weaverville, died Friday in
the Asheville VA Medical
Center at the age of N. No
funeral services were held.
A native of Madison County,
he was a retired farmer and a
veteran of World War I. He
was the son of the late John
Henry and Hettie Wilson Ray
and the husband of Esther
Johnson Ray, who died in 1173
Surviving are a daughter.

Walnut Cemetery.
A lifelong resident of
Madison County, she was the
widow of the late Henry Cody
who died in 1979.
Surviving are her three
daughters, Mallie Roberts of
Walnut, Mrs. Frank McLeod
of Camden, S.C. and Margaret
Cody of the home; two sons,
Carl Cody of Manchester, Mi.,
and Wayne Cody of Trenton,
Mich.; a brother, Charlie
Craine of Asheville; two half
brothers, Jim Craine of Mar
shall and Robert Craine of
Asheville; 14 grandchildren,
26 great-grandchildren and
four great-great
grandchildren.

A native of Madison County,
she was the daughter of the
late Clifford and Kittie Sue
Sherlin Rector.

ton of Alexander who died
Sunday in an Asheville
hospital at the age of 73. Ser
vices were held in the chapel
of the Bowman funeral Home
in Marshall with the Revs,

Crawford officiating. Burial
was conducted in the Ovid
Norton family cemetery.
Mr. Norton was a native of
Madison County and was a
retired employee of Southern
Railway. He was the son of the
late L. S. and Linda Thomas
Norton.
He is survived by three
daughters, Nola Koust and
Blanche Gaddy of Asheville.

ty, Mr. Whitt was the son of
the late L. H. Whitt. He was a
member of the cavalry during
World War II.
Surviving are his mother,
Ella Buckner Whitt of the
home, three sisters, Mrs. La la
Shipman of Weaverville, and
Mrs. Evelyn and Zeima Whitt
of the home, and a brother,
Charles Whitt of Weaverville.
Two Injured In
Weekend Shooting
Accidents
Two county residents were
injured Sunday in unrelated
shooting accidents.
Madison County Sheriff
K.Y. Ponder reported that he
responded to a call at approx
imately 6:30 p.m. Sunday
regarding a self-inflicted
wound suffered by Brent Nor
ton, 23, of Route 3, Marshall.
Norton told the sheriff he ac
ddently shot himself with a .38
caliber pistol while visiting
the home of Herchel Peek,
also of Route 3, Marshall. Nor
ton was taken to Memorial
A son, James Paul Nicholas,
was born to Tom and Angela
Simpson on Oct. 29 in
Memorial Mission Hospital in
Asheville. James weighed six
pounds and five ounces at
birth.

reported an earlier shooting
involving the 14-year-okl son
of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene
Stump of Grapevine. Sheriff
Ponder reported that the
teenager shot himself in the

reported the teenager was
taken to Memorial Mission
Hospital where he was treated
and released.
