This grant, awarded in November, 1984, is a $350,000 grant that must be matched two-for-one by the college. The $1,050,000 will then be used to establish a permanently endowed fund for faculty and curriculum renewal in the arts, sciences, and humanities. Sai H The Salvation Army opened IU tint office in Hot Springs last month at 125 Jackson St. Although the Salvation Army has been in Hot Springs for almost 20 years, this is its first office. Previously its business had been held out of its local director's home. Lt. Thomas Friddle, who was ap pointed the Salvation Army Officer for Madison County last month, says he hopes the separate office will give the organization better exposure in the community. "In the past, people may not have been aware of our presence in the community, operating out of so meone's home as we have," said Lt. Friddle. A new sign is expected to be placed over their new offices sometime in April. In the meantime, Lt. Friddle is seeking donations of clothing, fur niture and food goods, to be passed on to the needy in the area. Currently the Salvation Army of fice is in dire need of financial assistance of its own. It must rely on local contributions for its rent and utilities and. according to Lt. Friddle, the funds are not there at present. "Without some local support, we might be forced to shut down after on ly a few months of operation," said Lt. Friddle. "And that would be a shame for those so in need of our assistance." The Hot Springs office is open Mon days through Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to noon. Lt. Friddle asks that people call for an appointment. The office telephone number is 622-3359 Mail should be sent to the Salvation Army, P.O. Box 295, Hot Springs. N.C. 28743. Lt. Friddle may also be found on Fridays at the two Salvation Army churches at Sleepy Valley and Bonnie Hill. Church services are held at the two locations on Sundays, in Bonnie Hill at 9:90 a.m. and Sleepy Valley at 10 a.m. On Saturday, April S, there will be a rummage sale at the Sleepy Valley church from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will also be revival services at Sleepy Valley each night, April 9-13, starting at 7 p.m. Former S.A. Officer for Hot Springs, Brig. James Henry, will be conducting the services. For more information regarding the Salvation Army and its assistance programs to the community, contact Lt. Thomas Friddle at 622-3359.
