tjes recommended for initial survey
ipg. according to Prank Gatton. assis
tant state archivist, no one has yet
taken up the project.
' "It really isn't that difficult a
task," Gatton said, "and can be done
by any group or individual."
Though the Department of Ar
chives recommends the formation of
a local committee to oversee the pro
ject, one is not necessary, as evidenc
ed by the efforts of the Greater Ivy
Community Center.
"It does need an ongoing effort,"
Gatton said, "one that is best kept go
ing by a local forum that knows the
area."
Dillingham added that if the county
can get one member from each of its
eight or nine community develop
ment organizations, they could easily
form the basis of an ongoing commit
tee.
Copies of the North Caroline
Cemetery Survey can be obtained at
the Madison County Public Library
or the News-Record office in Mar
shall; and at the Rural Life Museum
or the Appalachian Room in Mars
Hill. Gatton says it is not necessary
for those filling out the survey to
know any of the topographical coor
dinates, such information can be
gathered at a later time.
"What is most important is that we
have the cemeteries registered with
fhp statp arrhiviK wp ran nrntort
them," Gatton said.
Dillingham suggests that all com
pleted surveys be returned to any of
the four locations, so copies can be
made for the public library's records.
Librarian Lucille Roberts has put
together a notebook identifying some
of the Madison County cemeteries.
"I believe it was George Bernard
Shaw who once said 'How we treat the
dead is a clear indication of how we
treat the living," Dillingham added.
"Out of this effort we put forth here is
going to come a great benefit for
many generations to come who have
there roots here in Madison County."

The body of a 40-year old Weaver

recovered Tuesday afternoon by
police officials who dragged Lake
Boone near Johnson City, Tenn. Bob
by Joe Hensley of Chadwick Wade
Dr. was found about 2:30 p.m. by
divers near a bridge which crosses
the lake
Police officials say the body was
found wrapped in blankets and weigh
ed down with cinder bocks. Hensley
had been shot once in the head. Ten
nessee officials speculate that
Hensley's death may have been
related to a drug deal. The dead man
was an Asheville city employee and a
Buncombe County Auxiliary sheriff's
deputy.
Police began a search for Hensley
on Sunday when a car registered in
his name was found on an unopened
section of Interstate 181 near
Elizabethton, Tenn. Family
members had not reported the man
missing until Sunday, thinking he had
gone to Lake Boone following a
domestic dispute.
Three men have been arrested and
charged with murder in connection
with the death. Two of the suspects.
George D. Humphreys, 33, of
Elizabethton and Allen R. Hodgkin
son, 25. of Washington County. Tenn.
were arrested on an unrelated charge
early Sunday morning in Washington
County. The men were originally
charged with possession of mari
juana and possession of a stolen han
dgun. Humphreys was also charged
with DUI.
A police check of the .357 Magnum
revealed that the gun was registered
to Hensley. Police later arrested
Richard Jones of Johnson City. Jones
was transported to Washington Coun
ty where he was also charged with
first degree murder. The three re
main in the Washington County Jail
today without bond.
