Marshall Native Serving In Pacific Paradise Gary Thorpe Enjoys Duty In Guam Castelloe Completes Training By CECIL NEWBERRY Army and Air Fore* Homatown News Marshall native Gary Thorpe is ata tioned half a world away from Madison County these days as a staff sergeant in the Air Force Thorpe is a munitions specialist with the 43rd Strategic Wing based at Andersen AFB in Guam. The 43rd Strategic Wing is the Strategic Air Command's only bomber base located outside the con tinental U.S. As such, the unit serves an fmportant and unique mission in the nation's defense Of his outfit, Thorpe says, "We are the security blanket of the United States." The Marshall native enjoys his Pacific duty station and his work with the 43rd. "I supervise 30 people in the munitions hauling section, where we haul munitions in the 500-700-pound range. We haul the munitions from the maintenence or storage areas to the fiightline and back. We use a semi-tractor trailer and special support equipment to move the bombs." While the folks back in Madison County are still thawing out from winter. Thorpe enjoys the tropical climate on Guam. "The weather is conducive to almost any type of out door activity," Thorpe reports. "On most any day of the year, I can take my boat out fishing, water skiing, div ing or just riding around in some of the clearest water in the world." A 1975 graduate of Madison High School, Thorpe is the son of James and Hester Thorpe of Dry Branch Rd. in Marshall. Airman First Class Kevin M Castelloe has graduated from tb? U.S. Air Force school for information systems specialists at Keesler Air Force Base, Miss. A 1976 graduate of Satellite H.S.?in Satellite Beach, Fla., AFC CasteHu is the son of Terrence and Cathriae Castelloe of Rt 2, Leicester. Jarvis Takes Part In Korean Training Exercise U.S. Army Private First Class Rodney K. Jarvis took part recently in military exercises conducted in South Korea. PFC Jarvis, a truck terminal operations co-ordinator with the 119th Transportation Co. stationed at Ft. Eustis, Va., took part in Team Spirit '8fi The operation was a joint training exercise for U.S. and South Korean troops conducted in South Korea and other locations in the Pacific Com mand. Hensley has reported (or duty with the 7th Infantry in West Germany. Hensley is an armored vehicle mechanic. He is the son of Mary L. Hensley of Mars Hill. U.S. Navy Fireman Recruit Michael C. Tipton has reported for duty about the repair ship USS Vulcan, homeported in Norfolk, Va. A 1984 graduate of Madison H.S., he is the son of Jack Tipton of Mars Hill.
