NWEC To Call Members of the Madison County Nuclear Waste Education Committee are volunteering their time to conduct a coun tywide telephone campaign to inform voters of the May 6 referrendum on the nuclear waste repository. The non-binding referendum will be conducted as part of primary elections throughout North Carolina. Unaffiliated voters are also eligible to vote on the question. Griffey Lawsuit Dismissed A former Marshall police chief's $1 million lawsuit against the town was dismissed on Tuesday morning in federal court in Asheville Former police chief Joe W. Griffey was seeking compensatory and punitive damages stemming from his dismissal from the town's police force in February of last year. Testimony in the case began Mon day afternoon in federal court. At torneys for the former police chief called Marshall aldermen John Dod son and Sammy Lunsford to testify. Former Marshall mayor Betty Wild also testified on behalf of the former police chief. Griffey contended that the town's aldermen violated his constitutional rights by dismissing him following an investigation of a high-speed chase Griffey and former police officer Larry Davis were involved in early in 1985. Griffey's attorney argued that his client's dismissal stemmed for political rivalries concerning control of the police force. a i a special meeting caiiea 10 in vestigate the incident, Griffey and Davis told the aldermen that they had engaged a teenaged motorist in a high-speed chase on U.S. 25-70 after the teenager apparently ran a stop sign. During the chase, Griffey fired nine shots at the fleeing vehicle. No one was injured in the incident. The fleeing suspect was charged with simple possession of marijuana, but was not convicted. Following the investigation, both Dodson and Lunsford voted to dismiss Griffey from the town police force. At the opening of court on Tuesday U.S. District Court Judge David B. Sentelle granted a motion to dismiss the case, saying there was no reason to send the case on to a jury for a deci sion. Jeffery Shuford Is Decorated U.S. Air Force Sgt. Jeffery M. Shuford was recently awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal for meritorious service. Major Alan George presented the medal to the Mars Hill native during ceremonies held at Elmendorf AFB, Alaska, where Sgt. Shuford is currently sta tioned. The medal was presented for Shuford's performance as a C-141 crew chief and aircraft controller with the 437th Military Airlift Wing at Charleston AFB, S.C. Sgt. Shuford is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Shuford of Mars Hill. Rape Crisis Center Needs Volunteers Volunteers are needed for the Rape Crisis Center of Madison County to work in areas of crisis intervention, victim advocacy, and community education. A comprehensive training course will begin June 2, with certification and continuing education credit available through A-B Technical Col lege.
