Holiday Death Toll
Projected At 21
The N. C. State Motor Club is pro
jecting a holiday traffic death toll of
21 persons during the 78-hour Labor
Day weekend which begins Friday,
August 29 at 6 p.m. and ends Monday,
September 1, at midnight.
The 1985 Labor Day holiday claim
ed 21 lives and, due to the current
trend of above average holiday
weekend fatalities, the death toll is
expected to equal or exceed this
number.
The leading driver violations con
tributing to fatal accidents last year
were Speeding and DUI/ Alcohol.
"The risk of injury or death to
every person who uses the roads is
very real," Dr. John G. Frazier III,
president of the statewide motor club
said. "No one can control all of the
factors involved in a traffic collision;
however, it is within every driver's
power to control his speed, and to
eliminate driving after drinking
alcoholic beverages," Frazier con
tinued.
"There is another very simple but
effective way of cutting your risk by
more than half, and that is to wear
your seat belt," he added.
According to the National Safety
Council and the National Highway
Traffic Safety Administration, seat:
belts are a proven life saver.
Labor Day is the holiday which
ends the -summer vacation season
and signals return to normal routines
for families, which means school for
the youngsters and concentrated
work for the parents. "We urge every
motorist to 'THINK SAFETY' in an
effort to make our highways safer
and end the summer vacation season
on a happy note," Prazier concluded
To date 875 traffic deaths have been
reported in North Carolina according
to the N. C. Division of Motor
Vehicles' records.
