Saturday Night Singirg The Middle Laurel Church of God will bold a singing service on Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. The Rev. Ray Fletcher, the church's pastor, invites all singers and listeners to attend. Second Sunday Night Singing The Alexander Baptist Church will hold a second Sunday night singing on Oct. 12 beginning at 7 p.m. The Alexander Singers, Skylanders, the Cantrell Quartet and others are ex pected to entertain and inspire. All singers and listeners are invited to attend. Revivals Planned At Laurel Fork A series of revival meetings will be held at the Laurel Fork Free Will Baptist Church beginning on Oct. 12. The church is located three miles south of Marshall. Rev. John Moore in vites everyone to attend. A special singing service will follow each night's services. Unemployment Rises Unemployment increased slightly during September according to figures released last week by the North Carolina Employment Security Commission (ESC.) The monthly report on statewide joblessness states that unemployment increased by two tenths of a percentage point dur ingthe month, to 5.4 percent. Madison County unemployment stood at 7.4 percent in August. September's county unemployment report will be released later this week. Nationally, unemployment stood at seven percent in Sept., up slitfitly from August's 6.8 reading. Pleases L? ?GO <Jjy[5)?[M] William Barclay calls our attention to one of Montaigne's grim essays about a Persian judge who centuries ago had been bribed to render an unjust and biased verdict on a certain case before Mm. When Cambysses, the king, teamed what had happened he ordered the judge executed. He decreed that the judge's body be skinned and tanned and used to cover the seat where the judges sat in judge ment a grim reminder to them that they should never allow prejudice to affect their verdicts. We shudder at such a method but it does bring into dear focus the awesome responsibility some among us have as they strive Jesus was clear and plain about judg ing. Said He: "Judge not that you be not judged. For with the judgement you pro nounce you will be judged, and the mea sure you give will be the measure you get' (Matt. 7:1,2) He was not speaking of our court sys tem so much as the system of flatten ihips with one another. He was reminding us that no person is good enough, yea, big enough to judge another In the daily court of public opinion where mercy, not justice, is called for.
