Mars Hill College Appoints 9 To Board Of Trustees Man Hill College has announced the nine appointed to its Board of Trustee's Class of 1980. Hie Board of Trustees is the official policy-making body of the college and divides its 36 members into four "classes" of nine members each. The trustees, who serve four year terms, have to be N.C. Baptists and are choaee by the N.C. Baptist State Con vention. Three of the Class of ISM are serv ing their first terms on the board They include Justus M. Amnions of Raleigh, Robert L. Merrill Sr. of Brevard and Lyndall G. English of -? 1 Community Calendar Commissioners To Hold Meeting The Madison County Board of Commissioners will hold its first night meeting at 7 p.m. Monday in Madison County Cour thouse. Mars Hill Board To Meet The Mars Hill Board of Aldermen will meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday in Mars Hill Town Hall. Hot Springs Board Sets Meeting The Hot Springs Board of Aldermen will meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday in Hot Springs Town Hall. Burley Day Planned The Annual Burley Day will be held at Mountain Heritage High School in Yancey County. The program will begin at 9 a.m., on Wednesday, Feb. 4. This is an opportunity for tobacco farmers to hear the latest information on varieties, disease control, weed control, fertility practices, sucker control and other production practices. A free lunch will be served. Per sons planning to attend should call Wiley DuVall at 649-2411 by Thursday, to reserve lunch. Agriculture Workshop To Be Held There will be a greenhouse and ornamentals workshop, Thursday, Feb. 5, in Asheville. For more information and sign up dates call the Agricultural Extension Service at 649-2411. AARP To Gather The regular monthly meeting of the Madison County chapter of AARP will be held on Feb. 4 at 1 p.m. at the Mar shall Senior Citizens Center on Long Branch Road. All retired persons are invited to attend. Cub Scouts Sponsor Dinner The Cub Scout Pact 524 of Mars Hill will be having its annual Blue and Gold dinner Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Mars Hill Bap tist Church. An Indian dance program with full costumes will follow the pot luck dinner. All Cub Scouts, other boys in terested in joining and their parents may attend. He is a member of the First Baptist Church of Raleigh where he held several positions. He is also a national director and past president of the Home Builders Association and is executive secretary of the Mid-Dixie Federa tion of Beagle Clubs. Merrill is an alumnus of Mars Hill and is a masonry contractor in Brevard. He and his wife sponsor the W. Scott Merrill Scholarship in memory of their son who was a freshman at Mars Hill when he was lulled in an automobile accident. He is a member of the First Baptist Church in Brevard where he is a deacon, Sunday School teacher and a member of several committees. He is also a member of the Tran sylvania Shrine Club where he has served as president, the Masonic Order, Chamber of Commerce and a 10-year member of the Transylvania Board of Education, where he has served as vice-chairman. English is also an alumnus of Mars Hill and is owner of Mountaineer | Ford Subaru in Spruce Pine as well a* several other Western North Carolina Ford dealerships. He is an active member of the Grassy Creek Baptist Church where he is a deacon and has been involved in lay missions work in cluding building mission churches in over-seas sites. Amnions, Merrill and English have all served as members of the college's Board of Advisors prior to being named trustees. Others who have served previous terms and were named to new terms include Dr. W. Otis Duck, well-known Madison County physician and former chairman of the board; Mrs. JoAnne Alexander, self-employed business woman from Statesville, the first woman named chairman of the board; the Rev. Ronald O. Brown, pastor of the Cumberland Baptist Church in Asheville; George M. Trout of Durham, president of Trout and Riggs Construction Co.; Robert L. Rowe, retired postmaster from Marion; and, Baxter J, Kiger of Yadkinville, and executive with Haynes Knitwear Corp. The board approves all major policy decisions, adopts the official budgets of the college, and rules on other matters of business. Authority for the day-to-day operation of the college is delegated to the president. The full board meets in regularly scheduled business meetings in December and at commencement in May. A-B Tech To Offer Free Tax Assistance Free tax assistance is available for selected taxpayers from Asheville Buncombe Technical College's second-year accounting students starting Monday. Eligible taxpayers can bring infor mation to Birch 221 on the A-B Tech campus in Asheville. Students will help low income, elderly, non-English speaking and handicapped taxpayers. Individuals who qualify for assistance should call Pam Baker at A-B Tech for an ap pointment, 254-1921, ext. 241. I Students will assit with forms 1040EZ, 1040A,or 1040. In addition, they will point out the special credits and deductions for which some tax payers may be eligible. Individuals requesting help should bring the tax package received this year, wage and earnings statements (Form W-2) from all employers, a copy of last year's tax return, and any other relevant data.
