Joe Crawford Joe Crawford, 92, of 23i Northwest Ave., Swannanoa, died last Thursday in an Asheville hospital. A native of Madison County, he had lived in Buncombe County for most of his life. He was the son of the late John Madison and Emma Tilson Crawford. He was a member of Oteen Baptist Church and an Army veteran of World War I. He retired from Beacon Manufacturing Co. Surviving are his wife, Mae Hughes Crawford; a daughter, Lois C. Hall of Swannonoa; a son, Charles J. Crawford of Asheville; two grand children; and, three great grandchildren. Services were held Saturday in Swannanoa First Baptist Church. The Revs. Jerry P. Pereira, James Lamb and Barry Roberts officiated. Burial was in Skyview Memorial Park. Myrtle Metcalf Myrtle Edwards Metcalf, 82, of Route 3 Mars Hill, died Friday at her residence. A lifelong resident of Madison County , she was a daughter of the late John Wesley and Ada Mae Carter Ed wards and the wife of Burgin W. Met calf , who died in IMS. Surviving are a daughter, Doris Carter of Mars Hill; a son. Roy W. Metcalf of Mars Hill; a sister, Elender Nichols of Atlas, OUa.; four brothers, Paul Edwards of Medford, Ore., Carter Edwards of Davis Creek, Calif., Roy Jay and Murphy Edwards of Mars Hill; three grandchildren; and, six great-grandchildren. Services were held Sunday in California Creek Baptist Church, of which she was a member. The Revs. Harrell Wood and Jerry Freeman of ficiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. James Drake James "Jim" Ray Drake, 56, of 1360 Brevard Road, Asheville, formerly of Mars Hill, died Saturday. A native of Madison County, he had retired from Overnite Trucking Lines and was a member of Mount Mitchell CB Club. He was the son of the late J. Orville and Margaret Williams Drake. Surviving are his wife, Peggy Faulkner Drake; three daughters, Peggy Jean Purr of Charlotte, Patricia Crisp of Enka and Kathy Matthews of Sky land; two sons, James O. Drake of Shelby and Steven Ray Drake of Asheville; a sister, Lucille Wentz of Charlotte; and, eight grandchildren. Services were held Tuesday in the chapel of Capps Funeral Home. The Revs. Ebb Jenkins, Stanley Peek and Dear! Ammons officiated. Burial was in Mars Hill Cemetery. Frank Robinson Frank Robinson, 66, of Route 3 Long Branch Road, Marshall, died April 22 at his residence. A lifelong resident of Madison County, he was an Army veteran of World War II. He retired from Sayles Biltmore Bleacheries and was a son of the late John and Julia Buckner Robinson. Surviving are his wife, ' Edna Blankenship Robinson; two daughters, Geneva Miller of Mare Hill and Sandra Loulae Rice of Mar shall; a son, Rocky Wayne Robinson of the home; two sisters, Bertha Austin of Asheville and Robbie Hensley of Dillon, S.C.; two brothers, Wayne Robinson of Appomattox, Va., and Guy Robinson of Cullowhee; five grandchildren; and, three great grandchildren. Services were held Saturday in Laurel Bend Baptist Church, of which he was a deacon. Hie Rev. Jerry Shelton officiated. Burial was in Shelton Cemetery. Grady Dills Grady Lafayette Dills, 68, of Medical Lake, Wash., died Saturday. A native of Jackson County, he had lived in Washington for several years. He was a son of the late Jesse and Ollie Green Dills. Surviving are his wife, Doris Dills; Ave daughters, Patricia, Brenda, Terri, Ethel and Marg Jane, all of Washington; three sons, Richard, Michael and Bill Dills, all of Washington; his stepmother, Gracie Green Dills of Cullowhee; five sisters, Marie Smith of Tuckasegee, JuaniU Greer of Weaverville, Dorris Beck of Sylva, Alma Shuford o t Bar nardsville and Frankie Reynolds of Franklin; and, two brothers, Harold Ray Dills of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Claude Dills of Huntersville. Services were held Friday in Spokane, Wash. Pearl Capps Pearl King Capps, 62, of Los Angeles, Calif., formerly of Leicester, died April 19 in a Glendale, Calif., hospital. A native of Buncombe County, she had lived in California for the past 35 years. She was a daughter of the late Talbert and Mae Surrett King. She was an employee of Occidental Col lege and was a member of Ebeoezer Baptist Church. Surviving are three daughters, Lin da DeLaRosa of Los Angeles, Debbie Reyes of La Crescents , Calif., and Brenda Stone of Las Vegas, Nev.; a son, Gary Capps Sr. of Covins, Calif. ; six sisters, Bertha Caldwell, Geneva Reemes and Phoebe Brown, all of Leicester, Dorothy Sinclair of Candler, Julia Hollifield of Asheville and Ruby Howey of Oak Park, Mich. ; two brothers, Jesse H. and Oliver M. King of Asheville; and, four grand children. Services were held Saturday in Jones Valley Baptist Church. The Rev. Garry Rogers officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. Mars Hill Graduation Is May 10 Dr. R. Kirby Godsey, president of Mercer University in Macon, Ga., will deliver the baccalaureate ad dress as part of Mars Hill College's commencement weekend May 10. The service will be held in the school's Moore Auditorium at 11 a.m. and will be followed at 2:30 p.m. by graduation ceremonies in which some 200 degrees will be presented to the members of the senior class. As usual. Dr. Fred Bentley, presi dent of Mars Hill, will address the graduates briefly after presenting their diplomas. Dr. J. Wesley Grayson of Laguna Hills, Calif., founder of Mars Hill's most prestigious scholarship pro gram, will also speak during the afternoon activities. One of the best educated university administrators in the nation, Godsey has earned two master's level degrees, two doctorates, and Area Woman Named Co-Editor The Mars Hill College Board for Student Communica tions has announced that editors for two of the school's student publications have been elected during the board's spring business meeting. Kitty Sanchagrin and Brenda Smith were named as co editors of the college's literary magazine, "Cadenza," while Lisa Starnes was elected editor of "The Hilltop," the student newspaper. Sanchagrin is a resident of Mars Hill, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Kenneth Sanchagrin. She graduated from Asheville Country Day School in 1965, and plans to major in English. Her co-editor, Smith, is a sophmore from Or mond Beach, Fla., the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William O. Smith of Bayberry Drive. She also plans an English major. Starnes is a native of Granite Falls, a graduate of South Caldwell High School, and is a first semester senior ma joring in psychology. She is the daughter of Mrs. Sandra Starnes of Bowman Road in Granite Falls. Each of the editors will receive a modest scholarship. The board is still considering applications for two other student-run media, the college yearbook, "The Laurel," and WVMH, its 100-watt FM educational station. The Board for Student Communications Media sets the operating policies for the publications and radio stations as well as conducts the search and elections for editors and mangagers. The board is composed of a cross section of college community members including faculty, ad ministration and students. honorary doctorate and Phi Kappa Phi Alpha Theta honors.
