Obituaries Mary Whitehurst Mary Runnion Whitehurst, 74, of Skyway Drive Apartments, Marshall, died May 6 in an Asheville hospital. A native of Madison County, she was a daughter of the late Charlie and Alice White Runnion and the wife of Roderick Whitehurst, who died in 1870. Surviving is a sister, Christine Rice of Marshall. Services were held Saturday in the chapel of Bowman Funeral Home. Wade Huey officiated. Burial was in Rice Family Cemetery. Paul Rice Sr. Paul Rice Sr., 43, of Aston Towers, Apartment 202, Asheville, died May S in an Asheville hospital. A lifelong resident of Buncombe County, he attended Deaverview Evangelist Church. He was a son of Laura Tilton Rice of Asheville and the late Arthur Rice. Surviving, in addition to the mother, are a son, Paul Rice Jr. of Leicester; seven sisters, Mildred Frady, Evelyn McMahan, June Moss, Beatrice Shipley and Hazel Var diman, all of Asheville, Betty Baldiwn of Arden and Pauline Hen son of Canton; and, a brother, Elmer Rice of Los Angeles, Calif. Services were held Friday in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home. The Rev. Homer Moore of ficiated. Burial was in Bethel Baptist Church cemetery. Thomas Smoot Thomas Henry Smoot, 65, of Thomasville, formerly of Marion, died May 5. A McDowell County native, he was the son of the late Thomas and Ida Husklns Smoot He served in World War II and was a textile worker. Surviving are two sons, James Thomas Smoot of Little Rock, Ark,, and Buddy Higgins of Weaverville; a daughter, Evelyn Bartlett of Marion; two brothers, Roy Smoot of Thomas vi lie and Zack Smoot of Marion ; three sisters, Louise Hensley of Marion, Margaret Higgins of Weaverville and Virginia Brown of Hickory; four grandchildren; and, a great-grandchild. Services were held Friday in Hicks Chapel Baptist Church. The Revs. Charles Hollifield and Johnny Johnson officiated. Burial was in Lil ly Branch Cemetery in Mitchell Coun ty. Alma Parham Alma Juanita Ballard Parham, 76, of Horse Shoe, died May 5 in Hazelwood. A Cherokee County native, she had lived in Buncombe County for most of her life before moving to Henderson County in 1971. She was a former private duty nurse and a member of Hendersonville Nazarene Church. She was a daughter of the late John Wiley and Addie Ann Hunter Ballard and the wife of the late Lester Parham. Surviving are five sons, Calvin Rickman of Horse Shoe, La ben Rickman of Arden, Murray D. Rickman and Thomas N. Barnes of Macon, Ga., and Daniel W. Barnes of Hendersonville; three daughters, Marie Corn of Hazelwood, Addie Jar vis of Weaverville and Linda Calloway of Asheville; four sisters, Fleta Ingle of Arden, Edith Cantini of Hendersonville, Floy Barnes of Englewood, Colo., and Eugenia Ballard of Horae Shoe; three brothers, Elmo Ballard of Header sonville, J.D. Ballard of Zirconia and James Ballard of Asheville ; 33 grand children; and, 39 great grandchildren. Services were held Saturday in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home. The Revs. William Grace, Jerry Jarvis and Don Dennis of ficiated. Burial was in Green Hills Cemetery. Jerry Fox Jerry Forest Fox, 81, of Moffitt Hill Road, Old Fort, died Sunday in a McDowell County hospital. A native of Buncombe County, he was a son of the late Will and Melissa Stevens Fox. He retired from Morgan Brothers and Drexel Furniture Co. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife, Bernice Stevens Fox; six brothers, Carl, Horace and Ruggles Fox, all of Black Mountain, Arthur Fox of Weaver ville, Harold Fox of Asheville and Henry Fox of Salisbury; and, five sisters, Lucille Dalton, Doris Cook and Jessie Cannon, all of Black Moun tain, Paulie Stark of Tucson, Ariz., and Virginia Proctor of Marion. Services were held Wednesday in Moffitt Hill Church, of which he was a member. The Rev. Lloyd Camp of ficiated. Burial was in Cherry Spr ings Memorial Park. Opal Huskey Opal Jeanette Wood Huskey, 59, of St. Charles, Mo., died May 4 in a St. Charles hospital. Bunch, who died in 1985, and the daughter of the late Charles and An nette Rocs Ornduff. Surviving are a daughter, Dorothy Weaver of Weaverville; five grand children; and, five great grandchildren. Services were held Monday in the chapel of Central United Methodist Church. The Rev. Cecil Myrick of ficiated.
