Wagon Train Trip Set
The Marshall wagon train, an annual July 4th trip, will
begin June 28 at Del Rio, Tenn. The trip will end on the Island
in Marshall on July 3. For more information contact Teddy

Sheriff Supporters To Hold Auction
The Concerned Citizens Committee will hold an auction to
raise funds for the Madison County Sheriff's Department on
Saturday at Mars Hill, in a building located beside the Mars
Hill Community Center. The flea market will begin at 5 p.m.
with the auction to follow at 7 p.m. Anyone wishing to donate
things to auction off, or contribute to the fund, may leave them
at the jail. For more information contact Bonnie Chandler at

Rummage Sale PLanned
Upper Laurel Community Development Club will have a
rummage sale at Murry Mountain store Saturday. Proceeds
will be used to buy shrubbery for the newly constructed Ebbs
Chapel Volunteer Fire Department. Donations for the sale will
be accepted at the community center all day Friday. For more

Hot Springs Crime Watch To Meet
The Hot Springs Community Watch will meet at 8 p.m. Mon
day at the community center Films on crime prevention will
be shown. Everyone is invited to attend.
Jurors Should Report Tuesday
The jurors for the term of district civil court to begin Mon
day need not report for duty until Tuesday.
Hospice Group To Meet
The Madison County Fiends of Hospice will meet at 7 p.m.
June 25 in the Hot Springs library. Everyone interested in a
new program for caring for the terminally ill is encouraged to
attend.
Laurel VFD Dance Scheduled
The Laurel Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary
will sponsor a dance Saturday at the fire hall from 8 p.m. to 12
midnight. Cost will be $2 and will feature the Carolina Misty
Band. ? '
Mars Hill Reunion Saturday
The Mars Hill High School class of 1962 will hold its reunion

Drug Program At Walnut Creek
The Walnut Creek Community Development Club will meet
Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the Enon Baptist Church Fellowship
Hall. Sheriff Dedrick Brown will present a drug awareness
program. Guest speaker will be George Holly, an inmate at
Craggy Prison.
SAR T To Present Play
The Southern Appalachian Theater opens the "Lucky Thir
teenth" season Friday with the Broadway musical hit "Man of
La Mancha." Tickets are $8 for adults and $7 for
students/senior citizens. For reservations call 689-1239 10 a.m.
to 5 p.m. daily or 10 a.m. to showtime on performance dates.
"Man of La Mancha" will run June 19-21; June 23-28 and July
30- Aug. 4.
Meeting To Address Landfills
A public meeting will be held Friday at Walnut School begin
ning at 7:30 p.m. to discuss clearcutting and landfills in

Roberts Appointed To Courts Commission
Gov. Jim Martin reappointed War
ren H. Owen of Charlotte and ap
pointed Dan Simpson of Morganton
and Clyde Roberts of Marshall to the
North Carolina Courts Commission
The North Carolina Courts Com
mission is a permanent legislative
committee set up to make studies of
the structure and organizations of the
Judicial Department and make
recommendations to the General
Assembly for changes in the depart
ment.
Simpson, 60, received a law degree
from Wake Forest University. He is
currently serving his second term as
a North Carolina state senator from
the 27th district. He previously serv
ed three terms in the House of
Representatives.
Roberts is currently retireed after
20 years in private law practice. He
graduated from the University of
North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He
taught school in Madison County for
five years before serving as clerk of
the Superior Court for Madison Coun
ty. He served as the district attorney
of Madison County for 16 years and is
the former mayor of Marshall.
Roberts was a House representative
for Madison County in 1949 and state
senator for the 30th district in 1961.
UNCA Offers Art Course For High School Juniors
A month-long summer art ex
perience for rising high school juniors
and seniors begins Wednesday at the
University of North Carolina at
Asheville.
The course is titled "Artsperience"
and carries three hours of college
level credit. The enrichment course
emphasizes a broad approach to
visual creativity through color and
design experiences in painting and
drawing.
The course meets from 1 to 4 p.m.
Monday through Wednesday in Owen
Hall studio 233. Course instructor is
Richard Weis, a UNCA visiting artist
who holds a master of fine arts
degree from Indiana University.
The cost of the course is $90 for tui
tion and fees and approximately $75
for materials.
