Church News * Ss ' ' . . . Ponder 's Chapel Plans Revival Revival services will be held at Pooler's Chapel Monday through July 17 beginning at 7:30 pjn. Henderson Decoration Day Set Decoration services will be held at the J. Lee Henderson cemetery July 12 beginning at 2 pjn. Alexander Baptist To Hold Singing Alexander Baptist Church will hold its second Sunday night singing at 7 p.m. on Sunday. Shoal Hill Plans Homecoming Shoal Hill Freewill Baptist Church will hold homecoming and decoration services on July 19 beginning at 11 ajn. A covered dish dinner and singing will follow. Grapevine Homecoming Sunday Grapevine Baptist Church will hold its annual homecoming celebration at noon Sunday. Activities will include a special singing and covered dish dinner on the grounds. Easter Gap Plans Benefit Singing Easter Gap Church will hold a benefit singing at 7 p.m. Friday to help with hospital expenses for Maynard Arlington. The Principals will perform, and refreshments will be available. Church Of God Homecoming Set Memorial Church of God in Cutshalltown will hold homecoming activities and a covered dish dinner at noon Sunday. The Rev. James Lovingood will be the guest speaker. Big Pine Schedules Revival Lower Big Pine Baptist Church will hold a week of revival services beginning Sunday. Services begin nightly at 7:30 pjn. The Rev. Gary Rogers will be the visiting pastor. Massey Decoration Day Set Decoration day will be held at 11 a jn. Sunday at the grave site of Tommy Richard Massey in the Massey Family Cemetery on Lower Big Pine. r Perry Burrell Perry Jerome Burrell, 101, of 741 Bull Creek Road, Marshall, died June 29 in a Madison County nursing center. A native of Buncombe County, he had lived in Madiaon County for the past four years. He was the son of the late Perry Duncan and MoUie Cole - Burrell and the husband of Emma Jean Mesaer Burrell, who died in 1985. He retired from Asheville Cotton Mill. Surviving are two daughters, Eula Mae Cappa of Marshall and Irma Jean Pack of Swannanoa; two sons, Aaron 0. Burrell of Chester, S.C., and Jesse B. Burrell of Swannanoa; 11 graodchildren; 12 great grandchildren ; and, four great-great grandchildren. Services were held last Thursday in Bull Creek Baptist Church cemetery. The Rev. Leonard Cole officiated. Rosa Brown Rosa Alice Smith Brown, M, of Route 2 Hoi combe Branch Road, Weaverville, died July 1 in an Asheville hospital. A native of Madison County, she had lived in Buncombe County for the past S3 years. She was a member of Pleasant Gap United Methodist Church. ' _ ts?^ws: ncTDcKT 5.) JOIU Brown, all of William C. Brown of Chicago, 111.; 10 grandchildren; and, men great granacmiaren. Services were held Friday in the chapel of Capps Funeral Home. The Revs. Sammy Martin and Worth Emory officiated. Burial was in Aahelawn Gardens of Memory. Thomas Martin Thomas L. Martin, 79, of 44101 Lathern St., Sterling Heights, Mich., formerly of Marshall, died June 28 at his residence. A native of Madison County, he had lived in Michigan for the past 62 years. He was a retired cleric from Chrysler Corp. He was the son of the late Rev. Jacob and Mary Plemmons Martin and the husband of Jessie Martin, who died in 1078. Surviving are a daughter, Nancy Spence of New York; two brothers, Jack Martin of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Clyde Martin of Charlotte; and, four sisters, Bennie Miller of Warren, Mich., Pearl Adams of Columbia, S.C., Vesta Huitt of Myrtle Beach and Maude Metcalf of Asheville. Services were held Friday in Oak Hill Baptist church. The Rev. Roger Peace Gathering Continues lite Baptist Peace Gathering of North Carolina is in the midst of its second annual conference at Mars Hill College, through Saturday. The conference has taken John 16:33 as its theme: "In the world you will have tribulation, but be of good cheer, for I have overcome the world." The conference features several speakers including Joseph Roberts, pastor of Ebeneter Baptist Church in Atlanta, Ga; Douglas John Hall, professor of Christian Theology at McGill Univeristy, Montreal, Canada; Montalepila Chabaku, native South African living in exile and serving as e Methodist minister in Asheboro; C.T. Vivian, chairman of the board of the Center for 1 Democratic Renewal, Atlanta; Yamina Apolinaris, former pastor 1 and president of the Baptist Churches of Puerto Rico; Paul Dekar, professor of Church History at Mo Master Divinity College in Canada; and, Jane M edema, lay Bible teacher and lecturer. Music is featured as well, with singer Ken M edema and Darrell ( Adams, songwriter and performer, who has had several appearances oo : television shows including "Prarie , Home Companion." A spokesman for the conference ?aid there will be "daily group sessions, lots of music and singing, free time to enjoy the mountains and a special children's program for children ages 6-13." Spurgeon Bullman Spurgeon Bullman, 80, of 1234 J upiter Road, Weaverville, died July 1 in a Buncombe County health care A native of Madiaon County, he had lived in Buncombe County for the past 43 years. He was a member of Dry Branch Free Will Baptist Church and a retired farmer. He was a son of the late Scottie and Elsie Gosnell Bullman. Surviving are his wife, Dinah Norton Bullman; three sons, Van Bullman of Asheville, the Rev. Arlan and the Rev. Arnold Bullman of Weaverville; a brother, Willis Bullman of Weaverville; a sister, Sophie Norton of Alexander; IS grandchildren; and, 10 great grandchildren. Services were held Friday in the chapel of Bowman Funeral Home. The Revs. Ralph Roberts and Rad ford Wilson officiated. Burial was in Spurgeon Bullman Cemetery, Weaverville. Rex Shelton Rex Shelton, 60, of Route 1, Flag Pond, Tom., died last Thursday in Asheville VA Medical Center. A native of Madison County and resident of Flag Pood for four years, he was a son of the late Coatney and Zenobia Franklin Shelton. He served in the Army during Work! War n. Surviving are his wife, Sylvia Johnson Shelton; a son, Donald Shelton of Flag Pond; two brothers, Max and Tom Shelton, both of Marshall; three sisters, Effie Worley and Grace Hensley, both of Marshall, and Bethel Shelton of Prospect, Va.; and, three grandchildren. Services were held Saturday in Culvin Creek Baptist Church. The Revs. Winfred Shelton and Lunnie Metcalf officiated. Burial was in Hensley Cemetery. James. Allen James Edward Allen, 51. of Route 1, Cue Cove Raod, Candler, died last in an Ashevllle hospital A native of Madison County, he had formerly lived in Haywood County and was a self-employed carpenter. He was a son of the late Weldon H. and Pansy Metcalf Allen and a for mer employee of Champion Papers. Surviving are a daughter, Wanda Hawkins of Brevard; two sons, Mark and Jimmy Allen of Canton; a sister, Imogene Allison of Etowah; two brothers, Porter Allen of Candler and Eugene alien of Tignall, Ga.; and, two grandchildren. Memorial services were held Saturday in the Canton chapel of Wells Funeral Home. The Rev. Edward Worley officiated.
