Chamber Of Commerce Sets Luncheon
The Madison County Chamber of Commerce will hold a lun
cheon meeting at 12:30 p.m. today (Thursday) at Western
Steer Steakhouse in Mars Hill. The subject of the meeting will
be Madison County's involvement in a Tennessee Valley
Authority pilot program.
Big Pine Auxiliary Plans Raffle
The newly formed Big Pine Volunteer Fire Department
Ladies Auxiliary is raffling a pieced bedspread donated by
Ruth Worley. The drawing will be held May 6. Call 649-2397 for

Cheerleader Try outs Scheduled
Madison Youth Football cheerleading sign ups will be held
at 6 p.m. May 11 at Mars Hill Elementary School. Practice will
be held May 12 at 6 p.m. and tryouts will be held May 14 at 10
a.m. Tryouts are open to any child who will be enrolled in the
Madison County school system in 1988-89. For more informa

The American Legion Post Auxiliary will meet Tuesday at 7

Community Meeting Rescheduled
The Walnut-Brush Creek Community Development Club has
rescheduled a meeting on the Community Watch Program
from May 2 to May 9 at 7 p.m. at Walnut Elementary School.

American Legion To Elect Officers
American Legion Post No. 317 will meet at 7 p.m. May 5 at

Man, 57, Charged
In Shooting Incident
A 57-year-old Madison County man
has been charged with shooting
another man during a domestic
dispute early Sunday morning in the
Ivy section of the county.
Richard Williams, 57, has been
charged with assault with a deadly
weapon with intent to Ull inflicting
serious injury, according to Madison
County Chief Deputy Dal Peek.
Williams, who turned himself in to
authorities, is being held in Madison
County Jail on >39,000 bond. Peek
said.
Williams is accused of shooting
Douglas Shaver, age and address
unknown, in the left side of the back
with a shotgun, Peek said
Authorities are still investigating
the shooting, he said.
At College
The North Carolina Symphony will
perform a pop* concert at Man Hill
College on May 4 to benefit the col
lege's current *10 million "Campaign
for the Future."
The concert will also be a
homecoming of aorta, as the founder
of the orcheatra, Lama Stringfield, is
an alumnus of the college. Stringfield
won a Pulitzer Prize in 1928 and
founded the statewide symphony in
1932.
The symphony will be in Western
North Carolina May 3-5 on one of its
educational tours and will play for
Madison County school children May
4 morning before performing that
evening in Moore Auditorium. The
68-member orchestra performs bet
ween 165 and 190 concerts each year.
This October it received high praise
from the critics for a concert in
Carneige Hall featuring the music of
Robert Ward, honoring the Durham
composer on his 70th birthday.
James Ogle, associate conductor,
will lead the orchestra through a pro
gram of American favorites in
cluding selections from "Oklahoma"
by Richard Rodgers, Aaron
Copeland's "Hoedown,"
"Evergreen" from "A Star is Born,"
and others from Henry Mancini, Mor
ton Gould and Leroy Anderson.
Ogle has been associated with the
symphony since 1974, when he won the
first Young Conductor's Competition.
He also won the Malko International
Conducting Competition in Denmark
that year. He has been associate con
ductor since the 1978-79 season.
Proceeds from the concert will go
toward new facilities for the Continu
ing Education Center. The building
housing the current library will be
refurbished to provide 35 double
occupancy rooms for continuing
education program visitors. Con
ference and classroom space as well
as offices will also be provided in the
renovated building.
Plans call for the library to move to
the current cafeteria, which will also
be renovated, and new cafeteria will
be constructed.
Tickets for the concert are 18 for
adults and $4 for children under 15.

Marine Lance Cpl. Bobby J. Swann,
son of Robert and Nina Swann of 51
Swann Road, Marshall, recently par
ticipated in Galera 88 while deployed
to the Mediterranean Sea with 22nd
Marine Expeditionary Unit, Camp
Lejeune.
The six-day operation was held in
Medronheira, Portugal, and included
a joint and combined air and surface
assault between the Portugese armed
forces and U.S. Marines and sailors.
A 1985 graduate of Madison High
School, Swann joined the Marine
Corps in October 1985. "a

Gary R. Metcalf, son of John W.

has been promoted in the U.S. Air
Force to the rank of major.
