HAMMER "PHOTO (From left to right), Dudley G. Pritchett, Helen A. Pritchett, Barbara Meade and Army Lieutenant Colonel Randy Meade reunite at the June 20 Reunion in Korea tour. A Special Reunion In Korea From Staff Reports A Hot Springs family was treated to a reunion in Korea with their daughter and her husband as part of a visitation program sponsored by the the Army. Dudley and Helen Pritchett joined their daugher Barbara Meade and her husband, Army Lieutenant Col onel Randy Meade, who is stationed at Yongsan Army Garrison in Seoul. The family shared a five-day visit in the Republic of Korea, including a welcome by top U.S. Forces in Korea officials and a briefing on the American commitment to that coun try and the threat facing peace and security in the area. "It was just wonderful," said Helen Pritchett, who, with her husband, returned Friday. "We had a wonder ful time. We received a tremendous welcome whether it was a restaurant or a shopping center." The program was established in 1981 in recognition of the centennial of diplomatic relations between the U.S. and the Republic of Korea. The pro gram demonstrates the Republic's appreciation of contributions to security on the Korean peninsula by enabling family members of U.S. Korean Forces and Department of Defense civilian personnel to visit that country at special group rates. The unique package includes round trip air fare, hotel accommodations and all meals and tours. USFK representatives accom panied the group through tours of the United Nations Command Joint Security Area at Panmunjom on Korea's Demilitarized Zone, the an cient Changduk Palace in Seoul, Bulkuksa Temple and the National Museum in Kyongju, the ancient capital of Korea's Shilla Dynasty. "We even stepped over the line of the de-militarized zone," Helen said. "On one trip we boarded a special train for a four and one-half ride to see a Buddhist temple and tombs of Korean kings." , The Pritchetts also saw the Korean Folk Village in Suwon. The village is like a living museum in that it in cludes reproductions of traditional Korean houses, complete with villagers practicing the ancient crafts and demonstrating ancient ways of life. In contrast, the group also got a tour of the Hyundai shipyard in Ulsan where modern craftsmen work in heavy industry. "There were over 400 dependents who went," said Helen. "We all had a, just wonderful time." The U.S. Army has some 29,000 soldiers in the Republic of Korea helping to protect the peace in a strategically vital area of the world. More than 90 per cent of them are ser ving one-year tours of duty away from their families.
