District Awards
Madison County 4-H'ers par
ticipated, along with hundreds of
others form 14 counties in the
Western District, in the annual
District 4-H Activity Day on June 30
at Enka High School.
The District 4-H Activity Day is
held to select winners to compete for
state honors during North Carolina
4-H Congress July 18-22 at North
Carolina State University.
The 4-H'ers made presentations in
serveral areas ranging from crafts to
public speaking.
Madison County 4-H'ers who par
ticipated, and their placing are:

ing, 1st place county winner; Charley
Davis, 4-H talent blue ribbon winner;
Eric Gardner, senior bicycle, 1st

In Our Own Way, a Mars Hill bas
ed, non-profit organization is helping
IfScal people try herbs this year as a
much needed alternative cash crop in
Madison County Farms.
Project Herbs is aimed at initiating
and developing small business based
on new agricultural commodities and
linking local people with new
economic opportunities.
This spirng. eight Madison County
Farmers planted demostration plots
to illustrate the techniques and pro
cedures involved in growing,
harvesting and marketing herbs.
Most of this year's crop will be sold in
local markets already identified by
the organization. This demonstration
phase of the two-year pilot project
will be the basis of an expanded par
ticipation next year.

that home grown industries offer the
best job and business opportunties in
regional, national and international
markets lor locally-grown herbs.

local people seeking income and
small business development.
"Herbs can succeed in Madison
County. We have good climate, good
soil, and good people. "says Garland
Woody. Woody, a retired agriculture
teacher from Madison County, is
working with the group to help iden
tify and meet the needs of local
farmers in growing and marketing
herbs.

Smith of the Organic Growers of
America at the Asheville Farmers
Market. Smith will provided
technical asistance in growing techni
ques and assist in identifying
NCU Gets Money For Tobacco Production
North Carolina State University
was given $356,691 for tobacco pro
duction and related research pro
jects. The research grant was
presented by R J Reynolds Tobacco
Company.
The funds will be used to support
research and extension programs
designated ^the North Carolina
Tobacco Foundation and the North
Carolina Tobrcco Foundation
Research Fund. In addition to the
Foundation projects, $160,000 has
been designated for research
directed toward understanding and
overcoming the blue mold disease
problem.

Reynolds Tobacco presented the
check to Dr. D. F. Bateman, dean of
the College of Agriculture and Life
Sciences at NCSU.

Pack On Dean's List
Brent Pack, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Britton Pack of Mars Hill, earned a
place on the spring term's dean's list
at Erskine College by attaining a
perfect 4.0 average for the term. Dr.
J. A. Knight, vice president and dean
of Erskine, announced.
To make the dean's list students
must have a grade-point-average of
at least 3.70 on a scale of 4.0.
Pack, a rising sophomore at Er
skine, holds and E.B. Kennedy
Scholarship, the highest scholarship
given to the college. He is a graduate
of Madison High School.
SART Stages
Painting Churches
The Southern Appalachian Reper
tory Theater (SART) continues the
fourteenth season of professional
theater with the comic drama Pain
ting Churches by Tina Howe.
Painting Churches will run July
14-17. Evening performances are at
8: 15 p.m. and Sunday matinees are at
2:30 p.m.
Cole, a musical tribute to the legen
dary Cole Porter by Benny Green and
Alan Strachan will return July 19-24.
