John T. Flynn, Sr.
John Thomas Flynn Sr., 90, of 16
Fisher Lane, died Sept. 13 in a
Charlotte hospital.
A native of Madison County, he was
a son of the late Walker and Lucinda
Griffin Flynn. A retired farmer, he
was the husband of the late Doris
West Flynn.
He is survived by three sons, John
T. Flynn, Jr., and Van Flynn of
Brevard, and Earl Flynn of Greer,
S.C.; a daughter, Joyce Cockran of
Charlotte; four brothers, Daniel
James, Lloyd and Frank Flynn of
Marshall; three sisters, Etta Tipton
of Asheville, Carrie Tipton and Callie
Wallin of Marshall; 13 grandchildren
and five great-grandchildren.
Services were held Friday in
Walnut Creek Baptist Church in
which he was a member. The Revs.
Billy Gillespie and Gerald Sprinkle
officiated. Burial was in Bowman
Rector Cemetery.
Ervin C. Lewis 1
Mich., died Sept. 12 in Ecors<
Ervin. C. Lewis, 78, of
A native of Buncombe County, he
had lived in Madison County before
moving to Michigan 25 years ago. A
retired carpenter, he was a son of the
iate Benjamin Harrison and Cora
Rice Lewis.
He is survived by his wife, Carrie
Cantreli Lewis; four sons, Clyde,
Gary and Alden Lewis of Ecorse, and
Ashley Lewis of Lincoln Park, Mich. ;
two daughters, Ruby Benette of Lin
coln Park and Christine Tackett of
Wyandotte, Mich.; two brothers,
Marion Lewis of Jonesborough,
Tenn.and Ralph Lewis of Enka; 11
grandchildren and five great*
grandchildren.
Services were held Friday in Big
Laurel Baptist Church of which he
was a member. The Rev. George
Massey will officiate. Burial was in
the Lewis Branch Cemetery.
Timothy C. Massey
Timothy Charles Massey, of
Asheville, died Sept. 5, in an Asheville
hospital.
He is survived by his parents,
Timothy DeWayne and Sandra Jean

Frank Harrison Goforth, 73, of King

A native of Madison County, he was
a son of the late Hezekiah and Ida
Bradburn Goforth. He was a retired
grading contractor.
He is survived by his wife, Paralee
Morrow Goforth ; three sons. Kenneth
E. Goforth of Dallas, Texas, Terry L.
Goforth of Largo, Fla., and D. Bruce
Goforth of Asheville; three sisters,
Edith Whitaker and Marie Wright of
Fairview and Eva E. Polverosa_of
San Andreas, Calif.; a brother. Rev.
John W. Goforth of Fairview; and

Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, of
which he was a member. The Revs
Bob Ponder and Lawrence Fox will

Phylis R. LeClerg
Phylis Robertson LeClerg died
Thursday, Sept. 8, in a Swannanoa
retirement home.
She was a former resident of Silver
Spring, Md., and had resided at the
retirement home in Swannonoa for
seven years. She was the widow of the
late Erwin L. LeClerg.
Survivors include one son, Robert
Erwin LedClerg of Weaverville and
two grandchildren.
Services were held Monday, Sept
12, at the chapel of Collins Funeral
Home at Silver Spring. The Rev.
David Gleason offlicated. Burial ws
in Fort Lincoln Cemetery in
Bladensburg, Md.
Lola J.S.B. Burllson
Lola Juanita Smith Brinkley
Burlison. 74, of Weaverville died
Saturday. Sept. 10 at her home
A lifelong resident of Buncombe
County, she has worked at Hadleys of
Weaverville for several years and
also at the Buncombe County Cour
thouse as a deputy matron. She was
the daughter of the late Henry Ed
ward and Ernestine Honeycutt Smith
and the wife of the late Robert Glen
Burlison.
Surviving her are three daughters.
Doris Buckner and Nancy Stephens of
Weaverville and Joyce Gosnell of
Asheville; three sons, Jerry Brinkley
of Cleveland, Ohio, Larry Brinkley of
Oakley and Phillip Burlison of
Weaverville; a brother, William R.
Smith of Cleveland, Ohio; 12 grand
children and four great
grandchildren.
Services were held Monday in the
chapel of West Funeral Home. The
Rev. Bruce West officiated. Burial
was in Ashelawn Gardens of
Memory.
Oren Duck
Oren Douglas Duck of Greensboro,
formerly of Mars Hill, died Monday
in a Greensboro hospital. He was 61
A native of Madison County and a
graduate of Western North Carolina
University, he was a retired ex
ecutive for Sears Son of the late
Charles A. and Eula Ponder Dock, he
was a member of the Bald Creek
Masonic Lodge No. 387 A.F.* A.M.
and the Bethel Baptist Church
Surviving is his wife, Evelyn
Anderson Duck.
Services were held Wednesday in
Capps Funeral Home chapel. The
Rev. Troy Rogers officiated. Burial
was in Mars Hill cemtery.
Daisy Price
Daisy Caldwell Price of Marshall
died Aug. 31. She was 93
A native of Madison County, she
had lived in Haywood County for 23
years and was a member of the
Mount Zion Baptist Church.
She was the daughter of the late
Lonzo and Lora Fullbright Caldwell.
Surviving are: one daughter, Mar
tha Plemmons of Hot Springs; two
sons, Sam Kirkpatrick of Hot Springs
and Joe Price of Clyde; one brother,
Jack Caldwell of Candler; three
grandchildren and give great grand
children, and one great-great grand
child.
A funeral was held Sept. 2 in the
chapel at Garretts Funeral Home in
Waynesville. Burial was in Crawford
Memorial Gardens in Clyde.
Gladys English, vice president of the Upper Laurel Com
imyiity Development Club, received a plaque on behalf of the
club at the Sept. 8 Western North Carolina Beautiful awards
prdgram. The Mountain Laurel 4-H Club of Madison County
also was honored, with an Honorable Mention in the non
community club category.
The Upper Laurel community won second place for the
manufactured mobile hom? improvement and- sa/ety contest
during ceremonies Sept. 8 for the Western 'North Carolina
Beautiful awardi program. Also, Zack and Jane Bailey of Up
per Laurel won third place. Ruth Gregory of Madison County
presented the Clean Streams awards at the event.
