DAVIS The opening guns of the first bar rage lifcf down, by the National Re employment Service were fired at a mfeeting in Southern Pines Thdfsday, high spots of which were: - 1. Recognition that there exists a national emergency of greater pro portions than at anytime since the world war, and that every effort should be exhausted iff aiding the President in his courageous effort to bring the drifting millions Of this country to a safe and sane anchorage in the port of peace, prosperity and tranquility. 2. Recognition that such is impos sible except by placing our great number of unemployed in gainful oc cupation so that, they can provide food, clothing and other necessities of life for themselves and their depend ents, thereby enabling them to retain their self-respect and to foster and perpetuate whatever amount of civili zation they have absorbed. 3. ft was the concensus of opinion of those present that the county should borrow $100,009.000 from the government at a low rate of interest, with the government granting 3fr per cent, which means that the county Would only hare W re-pay approxi mately $70,000100, over a long period of years. This money to be uaed_ for immediate' Work on Whatever projects that will be of the greatest benefit! to the county as a whole. Southern Pines is . preparing ,to, launch public W6rks to fhtf extent of $10,000.00 with an expected increase as the work progresses, so stated D. Q. Stutts, mayor. Edgar A. Brown, of Hemp, propos ed a sanitary district for Hemp, whereby they can qualify for a loan from the government to install a wa ter system at Hemp, cost not esti mated. Mayor J. This, in the writer’s opinion, is an un pleasant subject to the. ears of the taxpayers. However, we find ourselves unable to paytaxes already levied and will be unable to pay in the future unless we can bring some actual mon ey1 into the community; therefore we feel that if more jobs can .be made, the merchants, property owners and everybody will in some degree be benefitted to Such an. Extent they can take care of any additional levy that would’ be necessary. We, therefore, urge the property owners of Carthage to rally to the support of our city commissioners and encourage them in doing their part along with the c6un ty and other towns and communities in the county. A committee composed of tWenty five of the leading citizens of the county, including the mayors of the towns withim the county, members of the nattoflil ^reemploymentcommit-1 tee, Beads or the civic organizations j and others were appointed to call up- j on the counts' commissioners and city commissioners to outline various pro jects that Wilt be of most benefit to all and urge that steps be taken imme diately to provide as many jobs as possible. «..• t .
