We never miss the sunshine,
until the shadow! fall,-
We ne'er regret the bitter words,
. Till passed beyond recall.
We never miss the laughter,
Until the eyes are wet,
We never mis the happiness,
Till love's bright son has set
We never miss the singing,
Until the birds have flown.
We never miss the blossoms,
Until the spring has gone.
We never miss our joyousness,
Till sorrow bids us wake.
We never know we have a heart
Till it begins to break.

ENVIABLE WORKING CONDI
TIONS. Wage earners in this country earn,
more, live better, have more recrea
tion and yet save more than workeri
of any other country. Including
skilled and unskilled labor, the daily
pay of the American workman is
approximately that of the weekly pay
of the English workman. Yet the
'demand is equal to the supply in this
country, and in some crafts there is
a shortage, while in England about
Vt million 'persons are maintained
in idleness on the "dole" which the
government- contributes. England is
regarded as the most tightly union
ized country in the world.
Unions in the United States hava
done mueh to raise the standards of
pay and ' living conditions. Tho'-.o
standards now are at a level where
there should be little dissatisfaction,
lfStle excuse for labor disturbances
and strikes.
FROM MISSOURI.
Missouri business men have formed
an organization "to show the tax1
wastage and to formulate a plan
whereby the present methods of ad
ministration may be improved so the
tnxpayers may receive a larger re
turn." They propose to examine the wholn
state administrative system and also
that of the counties. Such an effort
should be welcomed by every public
official, as well as by the people.
L ' Several states have formed such
organizations and the rest should
follow, for it is only by organized
effort that state, county and city
taxes "will ever be reduced.
