Mrs. : Thackston was formerly Miss Eula Claire Kelley, a member of one of the finest families of central Car olina. She came from Charlotte to Waynesville about twenty five ears ago, and immediately bee line connect ed ' with some of the leading profes sional firms of the city as secret a In 1915 she was marrL'd to Ira II. Thackston, a prominent druirgist, connected with the Waynesville Phar macy and one of Haywood county's best known and most popular citizens. Throughout her entire life sh.l was deeply devoted to the various organ izy.tions, .'.institutions and movements that had - for- their ultimate aim the building of a better community. Ea ger to have a part in the development of all worthwhile things she was at the call of any one when her service was needed in almost every field of endeavor. She was ever ready to spend and be spent in the service of her community. She was a member of the First Methodist churc.'V and served faithfully in the various or ganizations of that church. Sh was also a member of the Daughters of American Revolution and Vririous civic and community clubs. With a devoted husband and a love ly daughter, her home life was often preferred to by her friends as ideal. Frohably no woman in Waynesville was happier than she. Because of her cheerful disposition and her unsel fishness and frank personally she was one of the most beloved women of the community. Her compan'onship was saught after by friends of all walks of life. Her home was a retreat where her intimate friends could go for comfurtT and so lace when they were passing through dark hours. She was a devoted wife, a wonderful mother, a communitj benediction. Airs. Thackston is survived by her husband, Ira H. He was presid.'nt of the North Carolina Good ttoads Asso ciation, had a part in ot'inmg about the legislature that resulted in the present road system of North (Caro lina. He was a director of North Carolina railroad '"or many years. Mr. Gilkey served as chairman of the McDowell' County Highway Com mission during the construction of the excellent system of highways in fHat county. He was chairman of the Board of Education of his home town for a long time. At present Mr. Gilkey is engaged in the manufactur ing business at Marion.
