This year, instead of the usual full length play, three one act plays were chosen. There was, however, a predominated Ihciiii- in the three plays, a patriotic note thr-nigfiout. The first play, "The Loyal Venture," took p'ace ' before the Revolutionary War and dealt with piracy and smug gling. This was an interesting study of a young country i en the colonies had nil love for the English rule. Willard Moody was convincing as the pi raw-. iill i revost seemed to Ik thoroughly at .home as the landlord. 'enjoying it fully. Milas Ferguson anil Walter 1 ratios were well east in their oiirts and Hamilton Akers did one of the strongest hits of acting as tb fhipwrecked captain. Irene Galloway iind Marcus McCracken also did well in their parts. In contrast to the lirst play was the dignity of "Little Lady Dresden. Colonial costumes added to the charm of this second presentation. James Harden Howell had much poise as Lafayette, while Sam Cabe showed a remarkable resemblance to'. .George Washington, It was a pity that Wash ington wasn't more in evidence Helen Medford was attractive as Joan and Nellie Mehaffey and Jewel Ilipps looked lovely in their costumes. Har riet Morrison, Marie Plott, Harold Haynes, Glenn Massey, and Carl Ratcliff completed the cast all doing their parts well. The last play, "White Aster?," was a drama of the heroism of two gen erations. Bill P revost was outstand ing in his portrayal of the Cor.fed erate veteran. This was one of the finest pieces of acting in the entire bill. Evelyn Morgan also gave a line sympathetic performance, first as a child enjoying the excitement, of a birthday party and then as a young woman whose (ianco returned from France, blind. Joe Helmick was good in the part of the young soldier. Doris Messer, Belle Bright and Paul Davis added to the group. Paul Davis' cor onet solo was a feature of this piay. These plays were presented under the direction of Miss Betsey Lane Quinlan, who is a graduate of Leland Powers'. School of the Spoken Word in Boston. She has recently returned from Chapel Hill where she has been working with the Carolina P!i.ymak ers both in acting and directing. The settings were excellent. The scene in the- tavern? in the: first play was rniarkable nr. J the gartL'n Kcene m the last prese:ir it ion was lovely. The costumes an I lighting were most effective Due to heavy rain? on the evening of this performance a number of peo ple were kept away. For this reason these plays will he repeated next week at the Waynewood theatre and it is hoped that the public will co operate with the Senior Class and a large audience will In? present William IL Smathers, Judge of the Common Pleas Court of Atlantic county, winner of the l'J.'lO Kivanis Good Deeds Award, and cutstanding Democrat of this county, is ! member of one of the most oro'nincnt famines of the old South. .He vu-; b'.;rn in Waytiesville, North Care'im, Jaiiu nry 7. the son of Benjamin I'f'iikhn and Laura Sma'aevs. ills early education u-, trained hi the public schools of Waynesville, fol loivng which ho oonti,m:'d studies at Washington and Lee University. Lee Ferguson FOR CHAIRMi BOARD COMMISSION I herehv nnn.n,. wuu,,, For Tax Collector J. H. Howell INTERESTING FACTS TOLD OF HOSPITAL (Continued from page 1) administer its affairs. An analysis of these figures will convince any thinking and reasonable person of the utter fallacy of the idea that "a tax payer has the right to lemand free hospital service. The aim of the hospital service at the lowest possible cost consistent with efficient service, the Board of Trus tess and the management arc laboring faithfully and earnestly to that end, and their efforts deserve the heartiest co-operation of every citizen of the county. If a deserving person is un able to pay the whole cost of the ser vice there is a means provided through the Duke Endowment whereby he can be helped. The deaf ear has never been turned to' any deserving person assailed by sickness and misfortune, the hospital has been a great thing for the county, its being here has proba bly saved many lives, it deserves the the support and co-operation of every citizen. The hospital cannot be maintained unless its patients pay for their ser vices. The county has built and equipped this modern plant thereby her citizens may get hospitalization at reasonable cost but if this cost of maintenance is not paid what would become of this wonderful institution? It would mean a vacant building and modern equipment rusting from disuse. Now as to the second phase the amount of taxes one pays to the hos pital fund. The rate this year is three cents per hundred dollars valuation, thus in case of an average man with a $4,000 taxable valuation pays into the j hospital fund only $1.20. It would be wonderful if the county could go into the health and accident insurance bus- mess and for only $1.20 a year insure a man against all hospital and medical expenses in case of illness or accident of himself or any member of his fam ilybut the county would go bankrupt. try any insurance company and see what it would cost you for such insurance. These facts arc set forth with the incere hope that all of the leading citizens may grasp more fully thoir obligation to this great institution for good in our midst and help dispell the idea among their lesser informed neighbors that just because the county built the hospital- not maintaining it they hafe the right to expect free hospital service. About .')." per cent of the tobacco plant bols in the main tobacc grow ing counties of western Carolina are infected with the blue mold disease. Flea beetles are also causing damage.
