Done At Low Cost
he work of the county farm agents
ijsj counties wh(re they are at pres-
employed costs an avejage of
than one cent out of each dollar
in county taxes.
'.his fact was developed last week
wine a study of figures secured
Charles A. Sheffield, assistant ex-
;on director at State College, from
State Tax Commission. The
ous counties oi isortn 'Carolina
d $31,800,000 in taxes in 1931
the average rate was $106. Out
ach dollar levied in the counties
bt one-half of one cent went to
y farm a;:ent work and this was
sed by one-fourth of a cent when
states appropriation was added,
total cost per dollar of tax money
, including the federal offset
unted to .88 of one cent.
nsidering-the cost of this wotk to
average tax payer of the county,
lever, if a man paid $5 in county
is, he would invest only a little
lour cents in the salary and ex-
(es or a county iarm, agent; if
aid $10 in taxes, he would invest
ly nine cents; If he paid ?25 in
s, he would invest 22 cents; if he
4& in taxes, he would invest
aits: if he paid $50. Jie would in-
44 cents: if he naid $75 in taxes.
twould invest 66 cents and if he.
$100 in taxes, he would invest
68 cents in farm agent work,
is less than one dollatr for eacfi
hundred dollars paid by the
mt county tax (payer.
kpite this low cost of county ex-
ion work, the agent is about the
numan corf.-veetioji the farmer
with his experiment station.
:e College, and United States
artment of Agricultul-e. More
e are returning to the farms
tnat city jobs are scarce and

ty agent is needed now more than
and it is false economy to dis-
with his work.
